In the latest television industry spat over carrier agreements, Nexstar‘s WPIX in New York and NewsNation are now unavailable on cable networks operated by Altice. This is just one more carriage dispute that has surfaced recently.
63 Nexstar TV stations across 42 different regions in the United States went off the air last Friday, due to a dispute over their contract. At the end of Q3 2024, Altice had approximately 2.03 million cable television subscribers.
Altice has persistently put forward excessive and unusual requests towards Nexstar, which ultimately led them to abandon the negotiations,” stated Michael Biard, president and COO of Nextar. “We acknowledge Altice’s financial challenges due to their heavy debt load, but increasing Optimum subscribers’ bills without providing better service isn’t a fair resolution.
Altice proposed a temporary extension during the ongoing negotiations, but Nextar declined this offer.
Regrettably, Nexstar is employing a strategy that’s not consumer-friendly – bundling less-watched channels with popular ones. This means Optimum and its customers are forced to pay for relatively unviewed channels such as NewsNation, while still receiving Nexstar broadcast stations in various locations nationwide,” Altice expressed in a statement.
Altice, a company that manages significant cable networks like those in New York as part of its Optimum service, is currently embroiled in a disagreement over carrier rights with MSG Networks, headed by James L. Dolan. Notably, his family previously ran Cablevision, which Altice acquired in 2015 for approximately $17.7 billion. The headquarters of Altice USA are located on Long Island, New York.
Nexstar has been engaged in “open, honest discussions” with Altice since October, but hinted that the service provider had proposed terms that are significantly different from what’s typical for their long-standing partnership and the current cable television industry. It’s become increasingly frequent for disagreements to arise between carriers, media companies, and station owners as viewers transition from traditional TV to streaming platforms.
Altice provides service to numerous communities, not just in the New York metropolitan region, but also in the south and midwest areas of the United States.
