Although Sony and Nintendo are selling more consoles than Xbox, a surprising contender achieved strong sales in third place last month. The Nex Playground has quickly become popular, and its CEO, David Lee, thinks a key to its success is fixing an issue that previously plagued the Nintendo Wii.
Almost twenty years ago, the Wii console revitalized Nintendo after the GameCube, thanks to its innovative motion controls and original games. However, Lee suggests the Wii’s massive popularity was hard to maintain. Unlike Nintendo, Nex Playground is releasing its games through a subscription service rather than selling them individually.
Lee explained to The Game Business that learning from past mistakes is crucial, which is why they use a subscription model. He pointed to Nintendo’s success with the Wii, but noted a potential issue: while the Wii broadened their audience, many players only purchased titles like Wii Fit and Wii Sports, limiting the variety of games people were buying.
Lee continued to praise Nintendo, but pointed out that their strategy of limiting game sales to a small portion of Wii owners wouldn’t work in the long run.
Lee emphasized the need to constantly innovate to keep our customers happy. He believes this is key to long-term success, and pointed out that it all began with the Wii console, building on a strong foundation of past achievements.
The Nex Playground console sold exceptionally well on Black Friday, capturing 14% of all console sales and surpassing the Xbox family in terms of volume.
