has officially been named the most viral anime of 2025, according to a new Japanese study.
I was looking at a recent report from Bushiroad’s Anime Data Insights Lab, and they analyzed 270 anime series from the past year to figure out what was trending. Most of those – 204, to be exact – were brand new shows, while the rest, 66, were either continuations of existing series or spin-offs. Interestingly, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX came out on top, scoring highest in both their overall trend rankings and in fan popularity.
Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX Ranks No. 1 as Anime’s Most Viral Release of 2025
In 2025, new releases were ranked based on two scores: Trend and Fan. For Trend Score, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX ranked fifth, following Takopi’s Original Sin, Sakamoto Days, Nukitashi: The Animation, and Medalist. Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX topped the Fan Score ranking, with Medalist, Milky Subway: The Galactic Limited Express, The Summer Hikaru Died, and Takopi’s Original Sin rounding out the top five.
The anime Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX was the most popular title, topping both the general Trend Score and the Fan Score charts. My Hero Academia‘s final season came in second on the Trend Score, while Medalist took that spot on the Fan Score. Rounding out the top five on the Trend Score were The Apothecary Diaries Season 2, Kingdom Season 6, and Takopi’s Original Sin. On the Fan Score, The Apothecary Diaries Season 2, Milky Subway: The Galactic Limited Express, and My Hero Academia completed the top five.
Created by Studio Khara and Sunrise with direction from Kazuya Tsurumaki, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX is the first new full anime series in the Universal Century timeline since Mobile Suit Victory Gundam in 1993. However, it offers a unique take on the classic series. GQuuuuuuX reimagines the Universal Century, telling a story where a different character pilots the RX-78-02 White Gundam instead of Amuro Ray.
Amate unexpectedly finds herself piloting a new, experimental Gundam called the gMS-Ω GQuuuuuuX when she gets caught in the chaos of Char Aznable’s reappearance. After accidentally helping Aznable escape in his Red Gundam and becoming a fugitive, she’s drawn into the dangerous world of illegal Gundam battles.
The story started in January 2025 with Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX: Beginning, which presented the unique ideas and new world featured throughout the series. The main Gundam GQuuuuuuX anime then premiered three months later, and many viewers felt it was similar in quality to the classic 1985 series, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam.
Critics generally liked the series upon its release, though viewers haven’t fully embraced its fast-paced and energetic style. Currently, it has a 6.8/10 rating on IMDb, based on over 720 reviews.
