New York City is suing YouTube, TikTok, Meta, and Snapchat, claiming their platforms are deliberately designed to be addictive and are harming the mental health of young people.
A 327-page lawsuit filed in federal court in Manhattan on October 8th alleges that these companies intentionally designed their platforms to be addictive for young people, using techniques to spread popular content and keep users hooked. The suit claims this behavior constitutes a public nuisance.
City leaders report that schools and hospitals have had to spend considerable money, staff time, and effort addressing the resulting problems.
According to a recent lawsuit, there’s been a worrying rise in dangerous and sometimes fatal incidents involving teenagers outside of school grounds in New York City, and this is believed to be connected to their social media use.
Teachers say students’ social media obsession caused “secondary trauma”
The legal case brings attention to the growing trend of dangerous “subway surfing” videos online. Sadly, at least 16 teenagers have died and over 100 have been arrested since 2023 while trying this risky stunt.
According to a lawsuit, New York City police investigations reveal that people who ride on the outside of subway trains are mainly motivated by wanting to copy videos they’ve seen online and gain popularity on social media. The lawsuit also states that teachers and school staff are experiencing stress and burnout while dealing with students affected by this dangerous trend.

A Google representative stated that the claims are false and demonstrate a misunderstanding of how YouTube works.
According to José Castañeda, who spoke with Engadget, YouTube is best understood as a streaming platform for watching videos – including live sports, podcasts, and content from popular creators – mainly on televisions. It’s not primarily a place to connect with friends like a social media network.
We’ve created resources, such as Supervised Experiences, designed for younger users. These tools were built with guidance from child safety professionals and give families ways to manage their children’s online activity.
Social media companies have been sued over similar issues in the past. For example, in 2024, a man in Canada started a class-action lawsuit against TikTok, YouTube, Reddit, Instagram, and Facebook, arguing that these apps are designed to be overly addictive.
