As a longtime PC enthusiast with years of experience building and upgrading my own rigs, I find the allegations against NZXT‘s Flex program quite troubling. It seems like they’re playing a game of bait-and-switch that would make even the most seasoned car salesman blush.
A recent report claims that NZXT, a well-known PC hardware company, is engaging in questionable practices through its PC rental program, being labeled as deceptive and manipulative. According to a video by Gamers Nexus, shared on The Verge, NZXT is accused of altering prices and components between the “purchase” and “rental” versions of identical or similar pre-built PCs.
In essence, NZXT’s Flex program enables users to lease pre-built gaming computers for a starting price of $59. However, it’s important to note that you would need your own monitor, keyboard, and mouse for this setup. As highlighted by Gamers Nexus, the specifications and prices of these pre-built models can vary significantly depending on whether you choose to buy or rent them. The video suggests that these prices and specs can alter “day by day.
For example, the video shows that a “Player: Three Prime” model PC contained an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 if a customer was set to buy it, whereas the rental version contained an RTX 4080 Super. However, the performance estimates–showing expected frame rates in certain games–did not change between the two models, despite containing significantly different hardware. These specs allegedly changed multiple times while Gamers Nexus was completing its report.
Beyond the reported problems with the Flex program, it’s been pointed out by Gamers Nexus that the cost of renting a pre-built system from NZXT could exceed the price of purchasing the same PC or its individual components within approximately nine months. This is important to note because there’s no buy-to-own option available. Furthermore, the program’s terms of service are said to be quite stringent, potentially permitting NZXT to sell data generated or stored on the rented computer.
NZXT acknowledges the recent allegations they’ve faced and are currently examining the circumstances. Be reassured that they are determined to handle this matter comprehensively, and they will release an official update shortly. They appreciate your understanding as they strive to bring clarity to the situation.
