Hello Kindred,

In our previous Dev Diary 18 (“Building Our Seattle”), we took a stroll through our version of Seattle, examining its roots and the environment you’ll traverse. Tonight, let’s delve further into the city, its residents, and the regulations that maintain order. These regulations—known as the Masquerade—aren’t mere guidelines; they are enforced laws. Disregard them, and you could face the wrath of a court assassin’s stake.

The First Tradition: The Masquerade

You should not disclose your true identity to those who are not part of your bloodline. Such action may invalidate your claims of being related by blood.

The first tradition, while universally respected, is frequently disregarded. Sloppy feeding incidents in public, vulgar exhibitions of undead prowess, and confessions to humans are common occurrences among Kindred. However, they must clean up after themselves or face severe consequences. The code in the crime world, “snitches get stitches,” doesn’t come close to expressing the importance both the Camarilla and the Anarchs place on the Masquerade. In today’s era of YouTube challenges, sensational headlines, and misinformation, a breach of the Masquerade can go unnoticed by the public, but any violation could lead to a black ops team breaking down your haven door. Only the most extreme Cainite supremacists envision an era where they can rule openly; the rest have accepted reality – it’s better for the undead to be parasitic powers behind the scenes than overt predators or rulers of human territories.

Masquerade Mechanics

In the realm of darkness, the Masquerade symbolizes the clandestine actions taken by vampires to hide themselves from human awareness for their preservation. Maintaining this secrecy is crucial because any widespread human knowledge about them could trigger a devastating reaction, eventually leading to the demise of their society.

In Seattle, the Masquerade is strictly upheld by the Camarilla, under the watchful eye of the Sheriff. Breaking this Masquerade, which includes displaying supernatural powers in public, can lead to harsh consequences ranging from expulsion to ultimate termination.

In the game “Bloodlines 2“, it’s crucial that you uphold the Masquerade. Neglecting this could lead to a fatal stake through your heart. To keep track of your actions, there is a Masquerade gauge at the top of the screen, divided into two main sections:

  1. Symbol of the Eye: An open eye means observation is ongoing, suggesting someone might be observing you at present. To carry out vampire-like activities discreetly, it’s advisable to do so away from human eyes.

  2. Eye Bands Filling Up: These bands increase when you’re found breaking Masquerade rules. The process unfolds across three levels or stages.

    • Maintained (Green): Light offenses like noticeably leaping higher than usual or running faster than normal are tolerated. However, continue to avoid multiple occurrences of such minor violations, as moving forward to the next level could ensue if this rule is disregarded.

    • Warning (Orange): Actions that are too frequent (like overfeeding, using aggressive powers, or accumulating multiple minor offenses) could lead to suspicion among humans. If someone observes your misdeed and reports it to the authorities, you have two options: confront the witness directly or evade the police. Forgetting-ability, which makes witnesses forget what they saw, can be an efficient tactic in such situations.

    • In this situation, the authorities are currently tracking you. It’s crucial that you evade them promptly to avoid being detected further. If the gauge reaches its maximum, the Camarilla will respond with immediate and ruthless actions to halt your operations.

Keeping up the disguise is crucial for staying alive in Bloodlines 2. Always stay alert and minimize risky actions to avoid drawing unwanted attention.

Phyre’s job as Sheriff

As the Sheriff, it’s the Nomad’s responsibility to maintain order, which involves preventing any outsiders from disrupting the Masquerade.

As a fervent admirer, I can’t help but notice the uneasy tension in the city. It seems the Court’s grip is slipping, and the unrest seeping from the narrow alleys threatens to spill into our very streets. The Police, bound by the Camarilla, appear more reactive than proactive when dealing with kindred matters. They seem to respond rather than prevent the chaos that unfolds among us.

From instigating chaos in a cemetery to brazenly attacking one of the city’s most prominent locations, groups such as the Anarch’s seize opportunities when they see cracks in authority, swiftly responding to the unrest.

As the Nomad embarks on their travels, the danger of being discovered escalates continually. In urban quests, we aim to include sudden outbreaks of chaos and lawlessness that demand the Sheriff’s immediate focus. The Nomad will need both quick decision-making skills and covert strategies. Their mission is threefold: to bring back order, decisively quash the adversaries of the Court, and possibly forge new alliances along the way.

Districts of Seattle

Hello, Bloodlines enthusiasts! Let’s delve into our version of Seattle. We’ve divided it into five unique zones: Uptown, Downtown, Chinatown, Financial District, and Industrial Area. Each district offers a distinct atmosphere, idiosyncrasies, and potential perils. This city never slumbers – you’ll be tracking your prey right in its core.

All areas blend together into a single, uninterrupted expanse. There are no obstacles or hindrances separating them, ensuring unbroken immersion. Feel free to explore, prowl, and maintain the Masquerade as necessary. From back alleys to rooftops, it’s your playground – or hunting ground. However, be cautious not to perform any inappropriate actions where locals might witness you, or else you may attract the attention of the authorities who may pursue you.

Each district boasts its unique character: Uptown and Financial areas are marked by towering skyscrapers, while Downtown pulses with life and density. Chinatown sparkles with lanterns and hides its mysteries. The Industrial district maintains a rugged charm with warehouses and factories. These distinct layouts significantly influence your journey and strategy.

The significant spots align with each district’s motif, ranging from a shrouded antique shop in the heart of Downtown to a vibrant nightspot in Uptown. As you delve deeper into the narrative, an increasing number of locations unravel, inviting you to discover more about the city’s hidden mysteries. And yes, there are recognizable Seattle landmarks scattered around. However, this isn’t the idyllic city depicted on postcards. Instead, it’s a place shrouded in darkness, designed with vampires in mind. Regrettably, you won’t find panoramic views of the Space Needle – unless you’re peering from a great height.

The neighborhoods of Seattle aren’t just scenery – they pulse with life. Dive in recklessly, and you’ll sense the tension. Play it too cautious, and you might overlook the hidden mysteries. Finding balance is crucial in this city that dances with shadows. Catch you on the streets.

Social feeding

Previously, we’ve discussed the topic of feeding within the city, but I’d like to clarify what exactly that entails for Phyre. While you’ll certainly have ample chances to eat, in the city, the concept of feeding goes beyond just meals. Let’s delve into the various ways feeding can be experienced within this urban environment.

Among the choices, there’s an option called social feeding. Unlike feeding during battle, which is usually forceful, aggressive, and merely a means to survive, social feeding is much more personal. It’s like a warm embrace instead of a fight. For me, it was crucial that social feeding felt unique – not just because it’s generally more enjoyable for Phyre, but because it challenges the player to carefully choose who to feed, where to strike, and how to approach the act. These feedings are slower, more thoughtful, and necessitate a cautious strategy.

Given that social feeding involves both intimacy and higher-stakes interactions, we were mindful about devising a strategy – tracking prey, orchestrating opportune moments, and above all, avoiding detection. Should civilians witness the act, they would immediately alert authorities, leading to potential confrontations and battles, frequently causing a breach of the Masquerade that could rapidly escalate into full-scale violence. I find the tension between risk and reward in social feeding to be captivating – something that’s simply not present in conventional combat scenarios.

As a Ventrue gamer, I prefer using my unique vampiric talents to soothe civilians and lead them to quiet hideaways where I can safely feed without causing a fuss in Seattle’s bustling streets. It’s one of the coolest aspects of playing this character.

In discussing alleyways, the Seattle depicted in Bloodlines 2 isn’t merely a hunting ground; it’s a vibrant city brimming with character, defined districts, and a multifaceted populace. As you traverse through this urban jungle, you’ll encounter various districts, each with its own distinctive atmosphere, appearance, and sustenance sources. Chinatown shimmers with neon light, pulsating with nightlife, whereas the Financial District is an ideal place to spot business professionals amidst the skyscrapers. The homeless are prevalent in most areas, but Downtown houses entire encampments. Knowing where to locate specific civilians can be crucial for mastering social feeding; after all, your strategies for dealing with bikers outside a bar will differ significantly from those used on shoppers in Uptown.
