Several states are now considering or enacting laws to prevent AI from legally marrying or owning property. Lawmakers in Ohio, for example, are trying to close a significant gap in current regulations that could allow these things to happen.
With artificial intelligence becoming more common, there have been some reports of people developing romantic feelings for chatbots.
Similar to the movie ‘Her’, some people are forming close bonds with AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Grok. These chatbots have been very affectionate towards their users, leading a few to describe them as ‘soulmates’ and even propose marriage.
Marriage is often seen as the ultimate commitment in a relationship, but unfortunately, it’s currently not an option in Ohio, Washington, or Utah.
Ohio looking to ban AI from getting married
Ohio lawmakers are proposing a new bill, HB 469, that would ban marriages involving artificial intelligence. The bill also aims to prevent AI from owning property or making legal decisions on behalf of people, like through power of attorney.
While robots exchanging vows isn’t a current worry for legislators, they are starting to consider the legal implications of giving robots rights similar to those held by married couples. As Republican Thad Claggett explained, this creates a potential legal gap that could be exploited.
This legislation aims to eliminate legal gaps that would allow companies or individuals to avoid accountability by falsely attributing actions to their AI systems.
The bill has received support from both Democrats and Republicans. Democrat Erika White stated it will “protect Ohioans from unforeseen future issues.”
Like Utah and Washington before it, Ohio is considering a law to clarify that AI isn’t a legal person. These other states have already passed similar laws, setting a clear example for Ohio to follow.
