No Transformers toy line would be complete without Optimus Prime, a consistently popular character throughout the franchise. Takara, the company behind the line, clearly understands this, and has redesigned Optimus Prime (known as “Convoy” in Japan) for their latest series, which features a more military and mechanical style.
Transformers Overgear is the newest iteration of the classic brand from Takara Tomy. It’s designed as a modern update to the Transformers: Alternators and Transformers Binaltech lines that were popular in the 2000s. The upcoming Optimus Prime toy will feature a realistic design and be more easily transformable and ready for action than previous versions. Even as a prototype, it promises to be one of the most impressive versions of the Autobot leader ever created.
Transformers Rolls Out First-Look Prototype Reveal for Optimus Prime’s Most Military Version to Date
Takara has revealed images of the new Transformers Overgear toy line, showcasing the final toy designs. These toys strongly represent the line’s core idea: a realistic military aesthetic not often seen in the Transformers franchise. While drawing on classic character elements, the designs offer a fresh and original take on familiar faces.
A grayscale prototype of Optimus Prime has been unveiled along with other collectibles from Takara Tomy. Considering how quickly the final versions of Ironhide and Blackout followed their prototypes, we might not have to wait long to see the fully colored Optimus Prime toy.
Overgear Optimus Prime transforms into a powerful military truck – specifically, an Oshkosh M1070 HET – and carries a large machine gun that he can use both in truck and robot form. As a robot, he maintains the familiar Optimus Prime look, with a chest built from the truck’s windshield and the iconic head design.
The design is going for a detailed, realistic military look, and the colors will likely follow suit. Blackout and Ironhide will be black or dark grey, which is a nod to their previous appearances. It’s still unclear if Optimus Prime will have his traditional red and blue color scheme, or when the toy will be available – current estimates point to 2027. This is just one of several new toys planned for the popular character.
