New Switch 2 Joy-Cons Are Here And They’re Extremely Underwhelming

Nintendo recently showed off the new Joy-Con controllers for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, and to be honest, they didn’t quite meet my expectations.

I wasn’t surprised by the $100 price – original Switch Joy-Cons cost $90, the new standard ones are $100, and gaming accessories are generally expensive. My issue isn’t the price itself, but the fact that these new Joy-Cons don’t seem much different from the ones already available.

Like the original Switch’s controllers, the new Switch 2 Joy-Cons will come in two-color combinations. These new ones are a bright pastel purple and a vivid aqua, which Nintendo calls “Light Green” – though I’m not sure I completely agree with that name! I actually really like these colors. I wasn’t very excited about most of the original Switch’s Joy-Con colors and didn’t feel like buying them, as they were often too bright and the color pairings didn’t appeal to me. I even bought a special Animal Crossing Switch just because I thought it had the best-looking Joy-Cons at the time. These new colors feel like a welcome change and a definite improvement.

The issue with these new Joy-Cons is that you won’t often be able to see the colors. When playing handheld or using the Joy-Con grip, the colored strips are completely hidden. While the colors look nice, it’s a little underwhelming that they’re mostly limited to small rings around the thumbsticks.

If you just want an extra set of Joy-Cons, these are a decent option – they’re at least a little different from the standard red and blue ones that come with the Switch. However, they don’t have the same fun, imaginative designs as the original Joy-Cons.
