It was likely a surprise to hear that Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki are coming back for a new Supernatural series, and that makes the announcement even more thrilling! However, there’s a slight catch regarding exactly what their involvement will be.
If you’re not familiar with everything happening in the world of Supernatural, you might not know about the new comic book series from Dynamite Entertainment. It takes place between the first and second seasons of the CW television show.
Similar to the show’s first few seasons, this comic features a new monster in each issue, giving fans a nostalgic feel of Sam and Dean’s classic monster hunting adventures. But how are Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki involved? The key is in the different cover designs for each issue.

Photo Variants Come From DYNAMITE’S Supernatural Series (2026-)

Comic book fans are used to seeing different cover versions of each issue, often with art by various artists. Sometimes, especially when a movie or TV show is turned into a comic, these alternate covers use photographs instead of illustrations. That’s how actors Jensen and Jared are making a comeback – appearing on special photo variant covers.
Dynamite has published five issues of the Supernatural comic book, and previews are out for issues #6 and #7. Each issue includes a special cover featuring photos of Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, who played Dean and Sam Winchester. These covers either recreate moments from the show or use images from the original CW series’ promotional materials.
Although the comic book stories happen between the first and second seasons of the show, the alternate cover art includes characters as they appear throughout the entire series. You can tell because Jared’s character has longer hair – a look he has in later seasons – and Dean increasingly looks frustrated with Sam, suggesting the images are from later in the show’s run.
Jensen and Jared’s Return Isn’t What Fans Expected, But It’s Still an Epic Tribute

Okay, so this isn’t exactly the Supernatural revival we were all dreaming of with Jensen and Jared, but honestly? As a huge fan, I’m still thrilled! These photo variant covers are amazing, and I absolutely need to add them to my Supernatural collection – maybe even build a little shrine for them!
The current comic book series is a way to honor Jensen and Jared Padalecki, the actors who built the passionate and hugely popular “Supernatural” fanbase. While fans hope to see them reprise their roles as Dean and Sam Winchester on screen, these photos offer a nice way to still connect with the show and characters.
Supernatural #6 from DYNAMITE is available to read on March 25, 206!
