New Sony Horror Sequel Opens Much Worse Than Previous Movie

As a big horror fan, I was really looking forward to Sony’s new movie, and everyone predicted it would be a hit over the holiday weekend. Sadly, the initial box office results have been disappointing – it didn’t perform nearly as well as expected. It’s a bit of a letdown, honestly.

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple underperforms at box office

As a huge cinema fan, I was following the opening weekend numbers for ’28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’ closely. It brought in $13 million domestically over the weekend, playing in 3,506 theaters, and the total domestic haul after the first week is $15 million. Globally, it’s done even better, with $16.2 million from international markets, bringing the worldwide total to a really promising $31.2 million so far.

The film earned $5.6 million on its opening Friday, then $4.1 million on Saturday (a 26.8% decrease), $3.3 million on Sunday (down 19.5%), and $2 million on Martin Luther King Jr. Day (a 39.4% drop), according to Box Office Mojo.

The movie was expected to earn between $20 and $22 million in the U.S. over the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, but it didn’t quite reach that goal. Distributed by Sony Pictures, the film cost $63 million to make. It’s rated R and runs for 1 hour and 49 minutes.

In comparison, “28 Years Later,” released in 2025, earned $30 million domestically and $70.4 million across North America. Worldwide, it brought in a total of $151.3 million, with another $80.8 million coming from international markets. This opening weekend was more than double the opening of the previous film, “The Bone Temple.”

Nia DaCosta directed and Alex Garland wrote “The Bone Temple,” which features Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, and Alfie Williams. The film continues the story of the Rage Virus, with Spike falling in with Jimmy Crystal’s group and Dr. Kelson making a groundbreaking discovery. Cillian Murphy makes a short appearance as Jim, setting up the next film in the series.

Although the movie didn’t make a lot of money at the box office, critics loved it, giving it a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – the best score of any film in the series. Reviewers praised the director, DaCosta, and the acting by Fiennes and O’Connell. Sony has announced they’re already planning a third movie.

After five weeks in theaters, Avatar: Fire and Ash was predicted to make $12–14 million, bringing its worldwide earnings to $1.23 billion. While The Bone Temple was expected to perform better, it didn’t quite reach those projected numbers.

Both 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple and Avatar: Fire and Ash are currently playing in theaters.
