New Sherlock Reunion Confirmed For Creator’s Hit Returning Detective Series 9 Years Later

Mark Gatiss is back as Gabriel Book in the second season of Bookish, and he’s brought in a familiar face from Sherlock to help. Bookish, which is currently airing weekly on PBS, follows Gabriel Book, a bookshop owner who secretly works as a detective in post-war London. He’s assisted by his wife, Trottie (Polly Walker), and his apprentices, Jack (Connor Finch) and Nora (Buket Kömür).

Every great consulting detective needs a police counterpart – someone to frustrate them and, eventually, become a friend. Think of Sherlock Holmes and Inspector Lestrade, or Bundle and Superintendent Battle in Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials. Mark Gatiss, the creator of the new series Bookish, has said he drew inspiration from both Arthur Conan Doyle and Christie, so it’s fitting that this dynamic appears in his latest work as well.

I’m really excited for season two of Bookish! Elliot Levey is fantastic as Inspector Bliss, and thankfully he’s coming back. But the casting news that really got me was Rupert Graves joining the show. You might recognize him as Inspector Lestrade from the BBC’s Sherlock – he was always a great foil to Benedict Cumberbatch’s Holmes. It’ll be fun to see what he brings to Bookish, and it sounds like he’ll be playing another former police detective alongside Bliss and the rest of Book’s friends.

I just got a peek at some first-look photos from season 2 of Bookish, and they’re fantastic! There’s one shot of David Graves as Colonel Reggie Winters looking a little worried while watching Trottie and Jack jump into a London cab – it definitely hints at some drama to come. I’m already hooked!

The show is adding several well-known British actors to the cast, including Jason Watkins (known from McDonald & Dodds), Miranda Richardson (Good Omens), Claire Skinner (Outnumbered), Youssef Kerkour (Home), Allan Corduner (Da Vinci’s Demons), Ruth Codd (How To Train Your Dragon), and Simon Callow (Four Weddings and a Funeral). They will be playing the roles of Harold Sneed, Duchess Alberta, Mrs. Calthrop, Yusuf, Maxie Kleinmann, India Flynn, and a character simply known as ‘E’, respectively.

The show will also welcome back Blake Harrison as Sergeant Morris, Rosie Cavaliero as Ada Dredge, Gerard Horan as Mr. Baseheart, Nadia Albina as Dr. Calder, and Jonas Nay as Felix.

The official synopsis for season 2’s three new cases, as revealed by UKTV, reads:

The second series sees Book delving into the world of spiritualism when he’s called upon to investigate the strange case of medium Harold Sneed (Watkins). Meanwhile, Bliss asks Book to help with a perplexing murder at a men’s clothing store – elderly tailor Maxie Kleinmann (Corduner) insists he’s the killer, but the evidence is confusing and suggests a more complicated, darker truth. Elsewhere, Book and Jack are sent by the enigmatic ‘E’ (Callow) to the picturesque German village of Würl to stop a thieving Duchess (Richardson) during the Christmas season. But the holiday spirit turns dangerous as Book and Jack uncover their own hidden secrets, both from the past and present, within a foreboding castle filled with potential suspects.

The TV show Bookish has been renewed for a second season, even before the first season aired in the UK! It’s received perfect reviews, with a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Filming finished in December 2025, and the new episodes will be shown on U&Alibi in the UK later this year.

The first season of Bookish features three different murder mysteries unfolding over six episodes. In the United States, the fourth episode, “Deadly Nitrate, Part 2,” will air on PBS on February 1st. This episode follows Book and his friends as they attempt to solve a series of murders taking place on a movie set in London.

Rupert Graves’ character might only appear in one episode of season 2, or he could return for multiple episodes as we learn more about Gabriel’s secret history – a past that even Winston Churchill knew about. Tune in when Bookish returns for a second season of mystery and murder.

New episodes of Bookish season 1 premiere on Sundays on PBS until February 15.
