Recent pictures of Robert Downey Jr. in his Doctor Doom costume suggest some interesting developments for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After playing Iron Man for over ten years, Downey Jr. is preparing for a new Marvel role in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday film. Instead of playing the familiar genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist, the 60-year-old actor will portray the classic comic book villain Doctor Doom, who will be the main antagonist in the next Avengers movie, a large-scale team-up involving the multiverse.
Ever since Robert Downey Jr. was revealed to be playing Doctor Doom, fans have been getting glimpses of his costume. But a newly released, high-definition image of the suit, shared online by Avengers Updates, is the clearest look yet at the villain in the upcoming Avengers 5.

A closer look at Doctor Doom’s costume reveals two hidden details that have Marvel fans buzzing. These symbols, attached to his cape, have sparked speculation about their significance for the larger, upcoming story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially considering its focus on the multiverse.
These emblems seem to depict a hammer and a star, and they closely resemble the iconic symbols of two popular Marvel characters.

The hammer strongly resembles Thor’s mighty Mjölnir, with its large, rectangular head and a handle built for a powerful grip.

As a huge fan, I immediately recognized that star! It’s the same one historically linked to the Kree, and it’s so cool to see it’s the very same star Captain Marvel—Brie Larson’s character—has emblazoned on her classic suit. It’s a really neat detail that connects everything!

I first caught a glimpse of this Doctor Doom suit back at the Disney Expo in China last September, but honestly, this new photo is so much clearer. As a huge Marvel fan, it’s the best look we’ve gotten yet at what the next Avengers villain will be wearing, and I’m really excited about it!

Robert Downey Jr. will officially play Doctor Doom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, after a brief appearance hinted at after the credits of Fantastic Four: First Steps. The movie, titled Avengers: Doomsday, will be directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, who also directed Endgame, and is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026. The film will feature Earth’s heroes teaming up with characters from different Marvel universes to defeat the villain Victor Von Doom.
Why Are The Captain Marvel and Thor logos on Doctor Doom’s Suit?
It’s strange to see fans celebrating Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom alongside heroes like Thor and Captain Marvel, but it might suggest a dark future for those characters, or at least some versions of them.
Maybe this version of Doom Slayer, while traveling between universes, has started collecting pins as a way to commemorate the important figures he defeats in each world.
This suggests that when Doctor Doom finally appears on the Avengers’ radar, he’ll have already conquered multiple universes. We might see glimpses of these victories – including worlds where different versions of Captain Marvel and Thor were defeated – to establish just how dangerous Doom is and demonstrate that no Avenger seems capable of stopping him.
Hints of just how ruthless Downey’s character will be have already appeared, most notably in a recent scene where Marvel displayed a version of Doomsday holding what looked like the skeleton of Thanos.
He might also keep a memento from that fight, perhaps attached to his outfit, as a way of remembering and respecting his toughest enemies by collecting keepsakes from each battle.
