I was listening to an interview with Zach Cregger on the Crew Call podcast, and he said something pretty surprising. When asked if the older Resident Evil movies influenced his approach to the new one, he admitted he’s actually never seen them! He quickly clarified, though, that he’s a huge fan of the games – he’s played them constantly and feels like a real expert on the Resident Evil franchise as a whole. So, it’s all about the games for him, not the films!

Cregger believes video games are naturally suited for film, admiring how they build suspense and maintain a thrilling rhythm. He feels no movie has truly captured the essence of these games, so he’s not focusing on what previous film adaptations have done right or wrong. Instead, he’s excited to translate the unique atmosphere and feeling of the games to the big screen.

He explained that he’s drawn to the unsettling atmosphere often found in these types of games, and he’s eager to explore how video game design and storytelling can work together. He believes there’s a lot of potential in blending the structures of video games and films – either by making a film feel like a game, or a game feel like a film – and is surprised this hasn’t been done more often.

The Resident Evil series started as a PlayStation game in the 1990s and later became available on other systems. The first movie adaptation, starring Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez, came out in 2002.
