Shuhei Yoshida, the former head of PlayStation, shared his insights in an interview with Kinda Funny Games about topics like the potential remaster of Bloodborne, the struggles faced by the PS Vita console, and his thoughts on PlayStation’s approach to live service games. However, just a day after this interview, reports from Bloomberg emerged suggesting that Sony has canceled development on two more live service games, further adding to the concerns about PlayStation’s strategy in this area.
According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, a company representative has confirmed that Sony has canceled two as-yet unnamed games. In a statement released by Sony, they mentioned their ongoing commitment to producing and delivering gaming experiences that cater to both solo play and multiplayer interactions.
Sony Cancels Two More PlayStation Projects
— Bloomberg (@business) January 16, 2025
It appears that Sony is facing challenges with its live-service game strategy, as two projects reportedly haven’t moved forward. One of these was a live service game based on the God of War series, which was being developed at Bluepoint Games, known for remastering Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Demon’s Souls. The other project was underway at Bend Studio, the team behind Days Gone. This decision to halt these projects follows a recent assessment at PlayStation Studios, where it was confirmed that PlayStation will persist in creating and publishing both online and offline games.
The spokesperson for the company further explained to Bloomberg that “Bend and Bluepoint are esteemed teams within PlayStation Studios, and we are collaborating closely with each studio to decide on their upcoming projects.” So far, PlayStation Studios have achieved significant success in the live service sector. For instance, after its global release, Arrowhead’s Helldivers 2, although facing some recent challenges, remains a top choice for multiplayer gaming. Even amidst NetEase Games’ triumph with their team-based PvP shooter featuring superheroes, Marvel Rivals, Helldivers 2 continues to thrive.
On the flip side, Firewalk Studios’ game Concord was markedly different from Helldivers 2, which lasted merely two weeks before its removal and the studio’s closure in October 2024. The exact consequences of these cancellations on employees at these studios are uncertain; however, a memo sent to Bloomberg indicates that they intend to collaborate with these studios to decide the best future steps, with the aim of minimizing any negative business effects.
