Play by Play Studios, formed by ex-EA developers, is creating a new, officially licensed NBA game called NBA The Run. The game will focus on 3-on-3 basketball and include players from around the globe.
Players can compete in elimination-style tournaments, going head-to-head with both real NBA players and imaginative, made-up characters. The game combines traditional basketball action with unique and surprising pairings. Longtime NBA Street announcer Bobbito Garcia is back to call the games.
Play by Play Studios highlighted the online technology in NBA The Run that makes gameplay smooth and responsive, even with internet connection delays. This ‘rollback netcode’ system anticipates what players will do, minimizes lag, and corrects any discrepancies by briefly rewinding and replaying the game. It’s a popular feature in fighting games, ensuring fair and quick matches despite potential connection issues.
Players will be able to compete on famous courts from across the globe, like Rucker Park, Venice Beach, and The Tenement in Taguig, Philippines.
NBA The Run, a new basketball game, is scheduled to release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in 2026. Players on all platforms will be able to play together thanks to cross-play functionality.
