New Magic: The Gathering And Dungeons & Dragons Video Games Are On The Way

As a seasoned gamer with years of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation when it comes to Chris Cocks’ leadership at Hasbro. The man knows his stuff, having been at the helm during the surge of Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons during the pandemic, and now, he’s ready to take these iconic games to new digital dimensions.

Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks is eager to dive into both work and play. A longtime Microsoft employee who joined Hasbro in 2016 as president of its Wizards of the Coast division, he’s focused on expanding the realms of Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons by developing new video games featuring these franchises.

In 2022, Cocks assumed control of the company and experienced a surge in sales during the pandemic period. However, as children returned to school, sales began to decline, leading to over 1,000 layoffs since then. Previously, Hasbro had invested $1 billion in video game development. When asked about this investment by Bloomberg, Cocks mentioned that they plan to allocate between $100-$150 million annually for game productions like Exodus, which will be developed by BioWare.

The CEO shared that our goal is to engage fans in their preferred digital spaces, as more and more people express their favorite brands digitally. To achieve this, Hasbro is actively working on its own Dungeons & Dragons video game, while the Wizards team is concentrating on a Commander-focused Magic: The Gathering video game. Additionally, a GI Joe action-adventure game is already in development.

25 years ago, TSR collaborated with Black Isle Studios and BioWare to develop the initial Baldur’s Gate game, set in the Forgotten Realms campaign using the 2.5 Edition rules. Additionally, Mattel produced a video game for the Intellivision. Given the recent surge in popularity of Baldur’s Gate 3, it seems sensible to revisit this franchise again.

In his words, it’s the essence of Magic that will fuel Hasbro’s continued success, and he emphasized that it revolves around playfulness.

Cocks oversaw the sales growth of Magic leap to $1.4 billion between 2019 and 2023. That number has been attributed to Cocks’ love for the game as he introduced new card packs for Magic and an online video game version called Magic: The Gathering Arena. He wants Hasbro to find a way to add more digital collectability to Magic, similar to Marvel Snap or, the recent Game Award nominee for Best Mobile Game, Pokemon TCG Pocket.

No details were shared regarding the upcoming games, and since Larian Studios has ceased development on Baldur’s Gate 3 and there are no plans for a sequel titled Baldur’s Gate 4, there is great curiosity about what characteristics and gameplay these new projects might feature.
