New Lord Of The Rings & The Hobbit Box Set Illustrated By Alan Lee Gets Early Black Friday Deal

Amazon is offering a great deal this week as part of its early Black Friday sales: a beautiful hardcover box set of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, illustrated by Alan Lee. Originally priced at $150, the set is currently available for just $92.93 – a 38% discount! Amazon notes that supplies are limited and the deal is popular, so it might sell out before the official Black Friday sale on November 20th. This special edition was published by William Morrow on October 14th.

While not as elaborate as last year’s deluxe illustrated set, it’s great to have matching editions of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. This is particularly true for these editions, which feature illustrations by the conceptual designer from the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies. This new four-book collection includes updated versions of The Lord of the Rings Centenary Edition (originally published in 1992 to celebrate Tolkien’s 100th birthday) and The Hobbit 60th Anniversary Edition (1997).

Last fall, William Morrow released a beautiful, illustrated boxed set of The Lord of the Rings. Originally priced at $325, it’s now available for just $108.30 – the lowest price it’s ever been, matching a deal from Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days.

This special edition of the book has been beautifully updated and expanded. It includes new illustrations, over 50 of the author’s original pencil sketches, three collectible art cards, and two large foldout maps. The three books are bound in leather and covered with cloth featuring new watercolor paintings and decorative foil details. The artwork extends to the edges of the pages and even inside the slipcase, which depicts the dramatic eruption of Mount Doom. The 1,332 pages are sewn for durability, and each book includes a ribbon bookmark.

The Deluxe Illustrated Box Set doesn’t include The Hobbit, but now you can buy a special edition to go with it. However, it’s quite expensive – nearly $200! This Deluxe edition of The Hobbit, like the Deluxe Lord of the Rings set, features brand-new artwork not available in previous editions. It includes full-color paintings, sketches, two fold-out maps, and a removable art card. Designed to match last year’s box set, it also has a high-quality slipcase. The Deluxe Hobbit is 384 pages long and normally costs $195, but Amazon currently has it on sale for $179.

The History of Middle-earth Box Sets

The new Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit slipcase sets share a similar look and feel with other Tolkien box sets William Morrow will release in 2024-25. John Howe designed the artwork for the four History of Middle-earth box sets, creating decorative covers that wrap around the boxes. Alan Lee contributed color illustrations and sketches to The Great Tales of Middle-earth box set, which came out in August. Currently, all six box sets are available at a significantly reduced price on Amazon.

Looking for a hardcover Lord of the Rings box set without spending a lot? You have a couple of great choices for around $50 or less. Amazon currently has the Lord of the Rings Collector’s Edition Box Set on sale for $51, down from $105. This set includes all three books with beautiful details like colored page edges, ribbon bookmarks, illustrated interiors, and decorative cover art. While they aren’t fully illustrated, these sets are affordable and look fantastic.

A popular option is the hardcover box set released in 1988, which is still available today. It has a classic design with artwork by Alan Lee on both the cover and slipcase, and is currently on sale at Amazon for $38.75—a significant discount from its usual price of $90.
