A new Lord of the Rings game is currently being made. It’s an action game played from a third-person perspective and is intended to rival the success of Hogwarts Legacy, according to a recent report.
According to Insider Gaming, sources familiar with the project have revealed that the upcoming, currently unnamed game is receiving funding – approximately $100 million USD – from the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO). The publication states that this deal may be officially announced as early as next week.
Besides ADIO, the upcoming Lord of the Rings game is reportedly also working with Embracer. Embracer holds the license for creating Lord of the Rings games and other content based on the fantasy series. The development studio, Revenge, is also believed to be contributing to the project. It’s an exciting collaboration!
An Embracer representative stated, “We don’t respond to rumors or guesswork.” Similarly, the studio Revenge chose not to offer a statement when contacted by Insider Gaming.
The report didn’t offer any concrete information about the rumored new Lord of the Rings game, so it’s currently unknown what it means that it might be created to rival Hogwarts Legacy. Hogwarts Legacy, which came out in 2023, was a massive hit, becoming the best-selling game of the year in the US. Warner Bros. is now focusing on making a sequel as a high priority.
When it comes to The Lord of the Rings, video games based on the series haven’t been very successful recently. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum had a very difficult release in 2023, leading its creator to cancel their next project and exit the gaming industry completely. And Tales of the Shire, released this year, received only average reviews.
It’s not surprising that Embracer is working on a new Lord of the Rings game. The company mentioned over a year ago that they were developing prototypes for several new titles. Previously, Lee Guinchard, who leads Embracer’s Lord of the Rings projects, expressed his desire for a revival of Lord of the Rings games.
Besides this recently announced, intriguing project, Embracer is also collaborating with Amazon Games to develop a new massively multiplayer online game (MMO) set in the world of Middle-earth.
Over the years, many memorable Lord of the Rings games have been released. The earlier games based on the movies were quite popular, and more recently, Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War were also fun to play-though the studio that made them, Monolith, has now closed. In addition to video games, Embracer Group is collaborating with Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema on several future movie projects, one of which is The Hunt for Gollum. Notably, Andy Serkis, famous for portraying Gollum in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings films, will be directing this new movie.
