I just got a first look at what’s coming to Apple TV+, and I’m excited about Matchbox. Yes, that Matchbox – the tiny toy cars! They’re making a full-blown action movie out of it, and it looks explosive. The director behind the Extraction films is at the helm, and the cast and crew are seriously impressive. It’s a really cool story too – the toys were originally designed back in 1953 by a dad who wanted something small enough for his daughter to bring to school. It’s a fun concept with a lot of potential, and I’m definitely adding it to my watchlist.
I’m so excited for Matchbox The Movie! It’s coming to Apple TV on October 9, 2026, and it’s being directed by Sam Hargrave, who I really admire for his work on Extraction and The Last Frontier. The script is by David Coggeshall, who wrote The Family Plan and Orphan: First Kill. It’s awesome to see Mattel bringing their classic toys to life on screen – especially after how well Barbie did! Matchbox is just the beginning; they’ve got Hot Wheels, Polly Pocket, Barney, Magic 8 Ball, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, and more all planned, and I can’t wait to see them all!
‘Matchbox’ Allowed Sam Hargrave To Flex “a Little Range” as a Storyteller
John Cena recently discussed how his new movie, Matchbox, will be different from the Extraction films starring Chris Hemsworth. While Extraction focuses heavily on intense action, Matchbox aims to balance that with more in-depth character development. Cena believes audiences will still be thrilled by the action sequences, but also highlighted director Sam Hargrave’s ability to tell a compelling story in his Apple TV film.
What I really enjoy about Matchbox is that Sam has the opportunity to showcase his acting skills in a more complex way. He gets to really tell a story through his character, something Extraction had glimpses of, but Matchbox allows him to fully explore. And of course, the action is going to be incredible.
John Cena clearly enjoyed working with his most recent director and expressed a strong desire to collaborate with them again soon.
The most important thing I got from that experience was a friendship and a huge amount of respect for Sam Hargrave. He’s truly inspiring and someone I admire. He consistently pushes you to be your best, and I love that relentless drive. Now I understand why his work is so impressive – he simply doesn’t accept failure. I’m really looking forward to working with him again, and I hope audiences enjoy ‘Matchbox.’ It’s a fantastic film, and it allowed him to showcase his storytelling abilities beyond just incredible stunts.
