As a huge film fan, I was so excited to finally see the first trailer for the new Harry Potter TV series on HBO Max, and wow, it really made an impact! It actually broke HBO’s record for most-viewed trailer ever – pretty incredible considering they brought us Game of Thrones. Predictably, everyone immediately started comparing it to the original movies, and you know fans – they’re picking apart every little detail! There’s been some unfortunate negativity surrounding the casting of Paapa Essiedu as Professor Snape, which is a shame. It’s got me, and apparently a lot of other people, revisiting the original films with Daniel Radcliffe. In fact, the whole franchise is currently topping streaming charts worldwide – it’s a full-on Harry Potter revival!
With the new Harry Potter series coming to HBO Max on December 25, 2026, the original Harry Potter films are experiencing a surge in popularity on the streaming service. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (known as The Philosopher’s Stone in some regions) is currently the most-watched movie worldwide. It seems fans are revisiting Warner Bros.’ adaptations of J.K. Rowling’s popular Wizarding World. However, only the first movie is trending globally; the others haven’t broken into the top 10. Surprisingly, The Sorcerer’s Stone isn’t even a top 10 hit in the US, where Ballerina: From the World of John Wick is currently the most popular movie, followed by John Wick: Chapter 4 and Dune.
If you saw the first Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, when it came out in 2001, you probably remember Daniel Radcliffe starting his film career as Harry Potter and Ralph Fiennes playing Voldemort. The original movies featured a fantastic cast of well-known actors, including Alan Rickman, Robbie Coltrane, Richard Harris (who was later played by Michael Gambon), and Maggie Smith. The new series doesn’t have quite the same star power yet, but many roles still need to be filled, most notably the character of Lord Voldemort.
Who Will Play Voldemort in HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Reboot?
The role of Voldemort is generating the most debate among fans when it comes to casting. Ever since the reboot was announced, people online have suggested actors like Ralph Ineson and Richard E. Grant, and even Cillian Murphy. However, it’s unlikely Cillian Murphy would take on another big TV series like Peaky Blinders, particularly one requiring a lot of special effects makeup.
As of today, the actor to play Lord Voldemort hasn’t been announced yet. Luke Thallon will be playing Professor Quirrell, a character closely connected to Voldemort, in the first season of the show. But we still don’t know who will portray the main villain.
HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Could Last for a Very Long Time
When HBO announced its new Harry Potter series, the initial plan was to adapt one book per season. This means the show is likely to last around seven or eight seasons (possibly eight if they divide the last book into two parts, similar to the films). Given that HBO shows usually have a two-year gap between seasons—with Euphoria being the exception—the Harry Potter reboot could potentially be on air for an incredible 14 years!
