Scientists have discovered a new species of fish and playfully named it Vanderhorstia Supersaiyan, referencing Goku’s powerful Super Saiyan form from the anime Dragon Ball Z.
The iconic scene of Goku transforming into a Super Saiyan while battling Frieza is well-known among anime fans. Interestingly, that memorable golden glow has now been used to name a newly discovered underwater animal.
Researchers were struck by the bright yellow stripes on the goby’s fins, which reminded them of a glowing power-up from an anime series, inspiring a uniquely anime-themed scientific name.
So, I was reading up on some new fish discoveries, and this one is pretty cool. It was described in a research paper after scientists found just one example near Okinawa, way down deep – around 210 meters! It’s a tiny fish, only about 77 millimeters long, but the colors are what really caught my eye. Definitely a unique little creature.
Okay, so I was checking out this new fish in the game, and it’s seriously cool looking. It’s got these bright yellow stripes running down its back, bottom, and tail fins, plus little yellow speckles on its head. But the coolest part is this pattern of diamond shapes all over its body – I haven’t seen any other fish in this Vanderhorstia family with that exact design. It makes it super easy to spot, which is awesome when you’re trying to collect them all!
Super Saiyan fish discovered in the ‘Twilight Zone’
Researchers found this new goby fish in a little-known, deep-sea area off Japan. What makes it stand out is its surprisingly bright colors – most deep-sea fish are much duller. Its unique combination of depth, body shape, and vibrant yellow coloring led the team to jokingly call it the ‘Super Saiyan’ goby.

The scientists who discovered this new species were directly inspired by Dragon Ball, explaining that the vibrant yellow pattern on the fin resembled the show’s famous character transformations. While it’s unusual for pop culture to influence official scientific naming, fans of anime have enthusiastically embraced the connection online.
It’s pretty wild, but scientists keep naming new discoveries after things from our favorite games and shows! Just recently, they found a new bee with horns and named it after the character Lucifer from the Netflix series. And earlier this year, some researchers found a new crab in the South China Sea and, get this, called it Teemo – after the League of Legends champion! It’s cool to see our hobbies influencing science like that.
