A new DC comic is generating a lot of buzz even before it hits shelves. According to one of its writers, the story will be inspired by thrillers like Mission: Impossible and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, hinting at a faster-paced, more action-packed adventure for the main character than fans are used to.
The comic book, Absolute Catwoman, marks the beginning of DC’s Absolute Universe spinoff series. Written by Che Grayson and Scott Snyder, with artwork by Bengal, this edition takes a different approach to the character of Selina Kyle, moving away from the typical focus on stealth and subtlety.
In an interview with “COMICS! The Magazine”, both writer Ram V (Grayson) and artist Eva Mendes (Bengal) discussed the upcoming “Absolute Catwoman” series. Grayson explained the comic will feature a Catwoman unlike any seen before, with bigger secrets and higher stakes, drawing comparisons to the “Mission: Impossible” and “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” series. Bengal added that this new version of Selina Kyle – a streetwise, masked vigilante – perfectly captures the spirit of DC’s “Absolute” line, representing a freedom that extends to both the story and the art style.
What we know about DC’s Absolute Catwoman so far
In the Absolute Universe, Selina Kyle was a mysterious figure for much of the first year of Absolute Batman. Like Bruce Wayne, she was raised on the streets of Gotham. After Bruce’s father was murdered, she was the first person to comfort him, even taking him out to the movies to distract him from his grief.
Selina and Bruce began dating as teenagers and even shared an apartment together for a short time. Back then, Selina was already a talented thief, and Bruce sometimes helped her with robberies. They eventually ended their relationship, though the reasons why remain unknown.
Selina wasn’t very reliable about staying in touch with her friends from childhood. They assumed she was traveling and spending money she’d probably gotten through dishonest means. In reality, she was perfecting her skills and transforming into the renowned international thief, Catwoman.
Catwoman has a reputation, and even Alfred Pennyworth, a skilled secret operative, warned Bruce Wayne not to trust her. Despite this warning, Bruce relied on her to help him fight Bane. It now appears that trust was a mistake, as Selina Kyle secretly stole a container of Venom that was inside Bruce’s body. Whether this storyline will continue in the new Absolute Catwoman series is still unknown.
Absolute Catwoman #1 arrives in comic shops everywhere on June 10, 2026.
