The original C64 Mini launched in 2018 for $70 and came with 64 classic games from the 1980s. This Black Edition is a special, limited release designed to honor the creative homebrew developers who are still making new games for the Commodore 64 on original hardware. It includes 25 modern games, like Sam’s Journey and A Pig Quest, which many fans now consider to be among the best Commodore 64 games ever.
Most of the new games – nineteen in total – are available on itch.io from popular Commodore 64 publishers like Psytronik and Protovision. Psytronik games are generally very affordable, usually costing five dollars or less, while Protovision titles tend to be more expensive. The system comes with four Protovision games that would normally cost around $55 if purchased separately: Sam’s Journey ($24), A Pig Quest ($11.61), MW Ultra ($11), and Yeti Mountain ($9). These are some of the most impressive games ever made for the C64. For example, the developers of Sam’s Journey created over 2,000 screens for its 30 lengthy levels. I consider it one of the best retro platformers I’ve played (it’s also available on NES), so it makes sense that the game’s main character is on the box for the Black Edition.
