Retro Games Limited has released a special black version of its tiny Commodore 64 computer. This limited-edition C64 Mini – Black Edition honors the developers making new games for the classic Commodore. It comes with the original 64 games plus 25 new titles, including popular C64 favorites like Sam’s Journey and A Pig Quest.
The black version of the C64 Mini costs $120 and is only available to buy from Amazon in the US. Although it sold out quickly on its release day (October 24th), you can still order one. The original C64 Mini came out in 2018 with a price of $70 – it’s currently on sale at Amazon for just $51. The price increase for the new version is likely due to economic factors like tariffs, but it’s probably mostly because it includes new, modern games.
Most of the new games – nineteen in total – are available on itch.io from well-known Commodore 64 publishers like Psytronik and Protovision. Psytronik games are generally very affordable, usually costing $5 or less, while Protovision titles tend to be more expensive. The system includes four Protovision games that would normally cost around $55 if purchased separately: Sam’s Journey ($24), A Pig Quest ($11.61), MW Ultra ($11), and Yeti Mountain ($9). These are some of the most impressive and ambitious games created for the C64. For example, the developers of Sam’s Journey built over 2,000 screens for its thirty extensive levels. It’s a fantastic retro platformer – and it’s also available on the NES! Considering all of this, the $50 price increase feels justified.
