Bethesda Game Studios used to be a leader in role-playing games and one of the most respected studios in the gaming world, but that’s no longer the case. While still a capable studio, it hasn’t reached the heights it did with games like Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Skyrim. It’s hard for any studio to consistently create masterpieces, which is why when studios like Rockstar Games manage to do so, it’s so remarkable. Bethesda isn’t alone in this – another major RPG developer, BioWare, has also seen a decline, though Bethesda’s hasn’t been as significant.
Bethesda Game Studios hasn’t been performing as strongly lately, and there are several contributing factors. These include losing skilled employees, problems with their game engine, and a sense of becoming too comfortable. A recent report also points to internal issues with the studio’s leadership, specifically raising concerns about creative director Todd Howard, a highly respected developer in the industry.
New Bethesda Report
A recent report from former Bethesda senior artist Dennis Mejillones details the internal environment at the company. Mejillones claims that Todd Howard has unintentionally fostered a culture where those around him avoid disagreeing with or questioning his ideas. This isn’t due to any specific actions by Howard, but rather his widely respected position as a leading figure in the gaming industry. This kind of dynamic can be problematic, as large-scale video game development relies heavily on teamwork and open collaboration.
A former Bethesda developer recently told Kiwi Talkz that many people were hesitant to disagree with Todd Howard, and this ultimately hindered him. The developer compared Howard to George Lucas, explaining that even brilliant people have bad ideas. Without honest feedback – which people often avoided giving due to fear – it’s difficult to identify and discard those flawed concepts. This lack of critical assessment, the developer believes, was a problem for Howard.
It’s important to remember that Mejillones’ viewpoint is just one perspective, and we can’t know for sure how accurate it is when it comes to what’s happening at Bethesda. However, he worked there for twelve years, from 2009 to 2021, so his insights are worth considering. If his claims are true, it could be a problem for the studio’s future and for The Elder Scrolls 6. Specifically, it could really hurt the studio in the long run. When Todd Howard eventually steps down, the gap he leaves will be difficult to fill. Ideally, Howard’s influence should gradually decrease over time. While that might be happening, it’s hard to believe if the current situation is as Mejillones describes.
Honestly, it’s not just Bethesda that struggles with this. I’ve noticed it with a lot of companies, especially those with a really public face like Todd Howard. And sadly, history shows that things usually don’t end well when leadership gets like this over the long run. It’s a pattern I’ve seen before, and it’s worrying.
