Rocksteady Studios, renowned UK game developer responsible for the Batman Arkham series, is rumored to revisit Batman for its upcoming project, after the poor reception of its last release, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Additionally, it’s speculated that WB Games Montreal is brainstorming concepts for a fresh Game of Thrones video game title. These developments were revealed in a recent report detailing potential projects being developed by different teams within Warner Bros.’ game development divisions.
According to a recent report by Bloomberg, it appears that Rocksteady Studios may be planning to revisit the Batman universe for a standalone video game. Yet, it’s important to note that this game is not expected to release anytime soon; we’re likely looking at several years before its release. At this point, there isn’t any additional information available about the project.
Rocksteady Studios is primarily recognized for creating the Batman games like Arkham Asylum (2009), Arkham City (2011), and Arkham Knight (2015). However, their 2024 release, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, marked a departure from their usual style with its focus on live-service features and multiplayer aspects. Unfortunately, it didn’t attract a large enough player base, resulting in significant financial losses for its parent company Warner Bros. The game has now concluded its final round of content updates, but fans were disappointed by the real ending that showed major characters who died were just clones.
According to the Bloomberg report, it was discovered that WB Games Montreal, responsible for Batman: Arkham Origins, was working on a live-service Batman game without Bruce Wayne. But as development progressed, the project’s direction shifted, resulting in the release of Gotham Knights in 2022, which received mixed reviews.
Following this, the report indicated that WB Games Montreal had an intention to develop a 1.5 version of Gotham Knights, which aimed to rectify some issues from the initial game. Nevertheless, it was reported that higher-ups rejected this concept, instead directing the team towards other internal game development projects.
The report continued by stating that following their initial proposal for a Constantine video game, members from WB Games Montreal proposed another project – this time a game featuring The Flash. Initially, management appeared to be eager about this concept, but higher-ups eventually suggested that the team focus on creating a game centered around a more well-known character instead. However, plans for a Flash game also failed as the 2023 film starring Ezra Miller underperformed at the box office.
It appears that WB Games Montreal is currently helping Monolith Productions with the development of the upcoming Wonder Woman game, which is facing some challenges. Additionally, there are rumors suggesting that WB Games Montreal is also working on a proposal for a new Game of Thrones game, but details about this project are scarce as it seems to be in its initial stages.
It’s not surprising that WB Games is concentrating on key series such as Batman and Game of Thrones, given that their parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, has stated they aim to boost success by focusing solely on their most significant franchises. Moreover, a follow-up to Hogwarts Legacy is being made at Avalanche Software, beyond these two titles.
The report emerged shortly following the departure of David Haddad, who was head of WB Games. At this point, a successor hasn’t been announced yet.
JB Perrette, head of Warner Bros. Games, acknowledged some challenges the company has been facing recently, but expressed confidence that it will recover within the next two to three years. He explained, “We won’t reach the profitability we aim for in the next two to three years. It will take approximately that time to rebuild and reset our operations to our desired level. However, the transition from operating at a loss to profitability will happen swiftly.
