Honestly, when this Sony Animation movie quietly dropped on Netflix back in June, I figured it’d be one of those films you watch once and then forget about. I really didn’t expect much. But wow, was I wrong! Seven months later, it still hasn’t left the Netflix Top 10, it actually had two runs in theaters that did really well, the soundtrack has been topping charts everywhere, and now it’s officially the most-watched movie ever on Netflix. It’s completely blown me away!
While the numbers aren’t the most spectacular, KPop Demon Hunters has still achieved impressive results: a 93% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes (based on 99 reviews) and a remarkable 99% audience score. Originally a film Sony sold to Netflix, KPop Demon Hunters has unexpectedly become a global phenomenon.
The new movie about a K-Pop group who secretly fight demons has been a huge success, earning over 100 award nominations and winning 83 awards so far. It’s already won a Golden Globe for Best Animated Motion Picture and Best Original Song (“Golden”). The movie is up for five awards at the Grammys on February 1st, including Song of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, and is also nominated for Best Original Song at the Oscars in March.
‘KPop Demon Hunters 2’ Will Expand the Franchise…in 2029

As a huge fan of KPop Demon Hunters, I was thrilled to hear about a sequel! It’s amazing how quickly it’s happening, though. Apparently, they didn’t have a follow-up planned, so we’re going to be waiting until 2029 to see what happens next with Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. Honestly, for an animated movie, that’s not a terrible wait, considering it was a surprise hit!
The gap between Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was five years, and the third film, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is coming out four years after the second. Disney, however, has taken much longer with its sequels – nine years after Zootopia, six years after Frozen 2, and eight years after the first Moana film. So, the four-year wait for a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters is fairly typical.

The movie remains incredibly popular with viewers, consistently topping the Netflix charts with around 9 million views each week. This is even higher than the 7.7 million views Jim Carrey’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas earned during the peak holiday season. It looks like this film has secured its spot as Netflix’s most-watched movie for a long time, and the only potential challenger appears to be KPop Demon Hunters, which is scheduled for release in 2029.
