Despite receiving a lukewarm reception from critics (a 60% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), the film directed by Byung-woo Kim is currently a huge hit on Netflix. It tells the story of a mother fighting to save her child as a massive flood engulfs their apartment building.
Just three days after it started streaming, The Great Flood is now the most-watched movie on Netflix around the world. It’s currently more popular than titles like Jake Paul vs. Anthony Joshua (2025), The Grinch (2018), Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery (2025), and The Croods: A New Age (2020).
The movie, featuring Kim Da-mi, Park Hae-soo, Lee Dong-chan, and Kwon Eun-sung, hasn’t been well-received by audiences, according to Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers rated it lower than critics, giving it a disappointing score of 43%.
Reviews for Wake Up Dead Man are much more favorable. The Rian Johnson mystery has a 92% approval rating from critics and a 94% audience score, which highlights how unreliable these ratings can be when trying to determine if a movie will be popular.
As a movie fan, I’ve been reading the reviews for The Great Flood, and the initial reaction is really positive. Everyone seems to agree the first act is fantastic – the way it shows the immediate aftermath of the flood and people just trying to survive is gripping. However, things get a little more mixed when the film delves into the characters’ stories and introduces some sci-fi elements. It’s not that people dislike those parts, but they’re definitely proving more controversial than the initial disaster sequence.
Even though the movie isn’t universally loved by critics and audiences, its recent popularity highlights the ongoing success of South Korean shows and films on Netflix. While Squid Game remains the biggest hit, especially after its final season this summer, other movies like Mantis (2025), Ballerina (2023), Kill Boksoon (2023), Peninsula (2020), and Alive* (2020) have also proven very popular with viewers.
The success of The Great Flood on Netflix continues a trend of popular international films, following titles like Under Paris (2024), Nowhere (2023), Brick (2025), and Exterritorial (2025). These films, which offer unique concepts and aren’t in English, can attract a large audience when the timing is right, even if critics aren’t fully on board.

Although it’s just been released, it’s not unexpected that The Great Flood is already climbing the Netflix charts. The real test of the movie’s success will be if it stays popular and remains in the top 10 for weeks to come.
It’s still too soon to know if The Great Flood will get a follow-up movie. If it stays popular on Netflix throughout December and January, a sequel is definitely a possibility. Netflix has done this before – for instance, they made a sequel to Under Paris after the first film did well.
