Netflix’s Oscar-Nominated Short Film ‘Anuja’ Gets Release Date and Trailer (EXCLUSIVE)

Netflix is planning to make the global debut of “Anuja,” the critically acclaimed and Academy Award-nominated short film focusing on sisterhood, fortitude, and optimism, on their streaming service on Wednesday, February 5. This release will also be accompanied by the premiere of the first trailer for the movie.

Originating from the Sanskrit term for “younger sister,” Anuja, is named after this character who is a 9-year-old orphan working in a seedy garment factory alongside her 17-year-old sibling Palak. When a teacher extends an exceptional chance to attend an exclusive boarding school to Anuja, she encounters a tough choice that echoes the struggles of numerous young girls worldwide who are faced with similar dilemmas.

Award-winning producer Guneet Monga (“The Elephant Whisperers”), along with actress-producer Mindy Kaling and executive producer Priyanka Chopra Jonas, are part of the team who helped create this touching tale. The film, directed by Adam J. Graves and produced by Suchitra Mattai, has garnered positive reviews, winning the award for best live-action short at the 2024 HollyShorts Film Festival, followed by an Oscar nomination just this past week.

As I stood there, humbled by the recognition, I couldn’t help but feel a profound sense of gratitude. ‘Anuja’, a labor of love that started as a small-scale endeavor among filmmakers, was never just about making a movie; it was about highlighting the indomitable spirit and strength of extraordinary children. It is with heartfelt appreciation that I thank the Academy for providing this story with a global stage to touch countless hearts.

Kaling expressed delight as ‘Anuja’ is now available on Netflix, reaching the global audience that it truly deserves.

As a cinephile myself, I couldn’t help but resonate with Chopra Jonas’ words when she highlighted the film’s powerful message. She expressed it beautifully: “This movie is an unfiltered, emotional journey into love, family, and strength. Being part of this incredible voyage has been truly enriching, and I can hardly wait for everyone to witness the enchantment that ‘Anuja’ holds.

The film’s influence transcends the cinema screen. Created collaboratively with Salaam Baalak Trust, a charity that supplies vital resources for street children, “Anuja” gives a platform to those typically silenced. Actress Sajda Pathan, who portrays the lead character, is herself a recipient of the trust’s aid.

In addition to Ananya Shanbhag and Nagesh Bhosle, the film features Akash Raje as its cinematographer and Fabrizio Mancinelli handling the music.
