Netflix is moving ahead with a live-action series inspired by the popular video game. A previous attempt to adapt the game in 2016 was not well-received by critics, but Netflix is giving it another shot with a new series.
Back in 2020, Ubisoft, the company behind the popular Assassin’s Creed games, began discussions with Netflix about adapting the games into a show. After a slow start, the project was officially confirmed this summer with the announcement of its creators and showrunners. Now, according to reports, Netflix’s live-action Assassin’s Creed series has cast Toby Wallace as its first actor.
Austin Butler, known for his roles in The Bikeriders (2023) and Eden (2024), has joined the series as a main cast member and is set to play a key character. While details about who he’ll be playing are still under wraps, Netflix describes the show as taking place in a complex world filled with secret partnerships, hidden motives, and a long history of conflict. This marks Butler’s return to Netflix after previously starring in the 2019 series The Society.
The next Assassin’s Creed game will be a fast-paced, thrilling story about a hidden conflict between two groups: one trying to control the future, and the other fighting to protect people’s freedom.
Netflix’s upcoming live-action series isn’t based on the game’s characters. Instead, it will follow a new group of characters as they navigate important moments in history and fight to determine the future of humankind.
Currently, Wallace is the only confirmed actor for the film, which is expected to begin filming in Italy around 2026. A specific release date hasn’t been announced yet.
This change happened this summer with the arrival of Roberto Patino (known for his work on Westworld and Sons of Anarchy) and David Wiener (Halo, The Killing), who all joined as creators, showrunners, and executive producers.
Ubisoft first released Assassin’s Creed in 2007, and the game has since become a huge success, selling over 230 million copies. It’s now one of the most popular video game series ever made.
Peter Friedlander, VP of Scripted Series at Netflix, explained that when they partnered with Ubisoft in 2020, their aim was to create a fresh and exciting adaptation of the Assassin’s Creed universe.
After years of working together, it’s amazing to see how much progress we’ve made. Thanks to the skillful direction of Roberto Patino and David Wiener, the team has created a grand adventure that respects the history of Assassin’s Creed while offering a fresh, exciting experience for both dedicated fans and new players.
Assassin’s Creed Won’t Be Netflix’s First Video Game Adaptation
Hollywood has long been interested in turning video games into movies and TV shows, largely because these games already have dedicated fans eager to see more of their beloved worlds. Over the past few decades, many video game adaptations – both animated and live-action – have proven to be successful.
The streaming service has produced several shows and movies based on popular video games, and many have been praised by critics. Some of the most well-known examples include Arcane, Castlevania, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and their newest release.
Assassin’s Creed doesn’t have a release date.
