Netflix’s Jurassic World Show Takes A Dig At Dominion’s Most Controversial Storyline

Warning: This article includes SPOILERS for Jurassic World: Chaos Theory season 4!

Season 4 of Netflix’s Jurassic World: Chaos Theory playfully pokes fun at a particularly debated plot point from Jurassic World Dominion. The Jurassic Park franchise has been running for 32 years and has become a massive success, earning over $10.1 billion and ranking among the highest-grossing franchises ever.

While not every Jurassic Park movie has been a hit – many consider Jurassic World Dominion the weakest – the franchise has recently improved with strong new releases. These include the Netflix series Jurassic World: Chaos Theory and the film Jurassic World Rebirth.

The final season of Jurassic World: Chaos Theory doesn’t just improve on the story of Dominion; it also cleverly addresses and jokes about the most debated part of the movie’s plot.

Jurassic World: Chaos Theory Season 4 Makes Fun Of Dominion’s Locust Storyline

After Jurassic World Dominion came out, a popular running joke was that the movie spent more time focusing on huge, genetically modified locusts than on dinosaurs. Many memes highlighted this mismatch between what people expected and what the film actually delivered. Now, it appears the new season of Jurassic World: Chaos Theory is acknowledging and playing along with that joke.

As the group of six travels through the perilous Biosyn Valley, dodging deadly dinosaurs, a massive, flaming locust appears. Yazmina exclaims, “Locusts? Seriously, more of these?” While fitting for the moment, her line cleverly mirrors how the audience might be feeling about the increasingly unbelievable locust plotline.

Even The Jurassic Park Franchise Thinks The Locust Storyline Was Silly

The Jurassic Park movies jokingly reference their own storyline about locusts, which suggests the filmmakers now realize focusing so much on locusts in a dinosaur movie wasn’t a great idea.

While they can’t completely rewrite the events of Dominion, especially considering how it connects to seasons 3 and 4 of Jurassic World: Chaos Theory, the creators have listened to fan feedback. They’ve worked to address the problems and are making light of the parts they can’t fix.

Chaos Theory’s Locus Joke Continues The Show’s Meta Humor

If the comment about locusts was all there was, I’d probably just assume Yaz was reacting naturally. But Camp Cretaceous included some self-aware moments, and this is the second time Jurassic World: Chaos Theory has poked fun at some of the sillier parts of the Jurassic World films.

The third season of Jurassic World: Chaos Theory ended with a funny moment referencing Owen Grady’s often-mocked hand signal, which became a popular internet meme. In the scene, The Handler attempts the gesture, and Soyona Santos jokingly complains, “Ugh, this again.” Predictably, The Handler is then quickly eaten by the Carnotaurus.

The self-aware humor in Jurassic World: Chaos Theory isn’t meant to be disrespectful. The series is full of references and nods to the original Jurassic Park, and even brings back a beloved character from the first film. The creators clearly appreciate the source material, and their jokes are made with affection.

It’s really nice to see the writers of the Netflix show understand what makes a good story, especially within the large Jurassic Park franchise. I hope future Netflix shows following Jurassic World: Chaos Theory keep up this same level of self-awareness.
