Netflix is seeing huge success with its latest thriller, starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, which is already a popular streaming choice. Even though January is only halfway over, Netflix is having a fantastic start to 2026. Original films like the romantic comedy People We Meet on Vacation, and thrilling series such as Land of Sin and Run Away, are proving to be big hits with viewers.
Netflix is clearly succeeding with thriller content, as evidenced by the recent performance of its latest film. “The Rip,” starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, quickly rose to the top of Netflix charts worldwide. While the star power of Affleck and Damon is a definite draw, it’s not the sole reason for the movie’s popularity.
According to FlixPatrol, The Rip is currently the most popular movie on Netflix globally. The new thriller has overtaken the previous top film, People We Meet on Vacation, which is now in second place. Rounding out the top three is the documentary One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5.
The new movie The Rip is a huge hit around the world, currently popular in 91 countries. The film, a collaboration between Damon and Affleck, has reached number one on Netflix’s Top Movies list in an impressive 85 countries. It’s topping charts in places like the United Kingdom, Brazil, Australia, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and numerous other nations.
Netflix’s new action thriller is a big success across the country. Currently, The Rip is the number one movie in the United States. People We Meet on Vacation is holding strong at number two, but the movie in third place differs depending on whether you look at worldwide numbers or just the US. Internationally and in the US overall, Suitcase Killer: The Melanie McGuire Story is in third place.
Released on Netflix on January 16, 2026, The Rip quickly became the most-watched movie worldwide after just one day. The film boasts a well-known cast, including Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Steven Yeun (from The Walking Dead), Teyana Taylor (known for One Battle After Another), Sasha Calle (The Flash), Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights), and many other talented actors.
As of today, “The Rip” has received an 82% approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 72% audience score. Alex Harrison of ScreenRant described the movie as “a good time when experienced on its wavelength, and worthy material for a relaxed night in.” There are currently no plans for a sequel to “The Rip.”
