The current top crime thriller on Netflix isn’t actually one of their own shows. Surprisingly, it was created and released by a competing streaming service.
Originally airing from 2017 to 2020 with three seasons and 30 episodes, this series is now experiencing a surge in popularity on Netflix. Currently, it’s the fourth most-watched show worldwide on the platform, according to FlixPatrol.
Okay, so no surprise here – Stranger Things Season 5 is absolutely crushing it on Netflix! The first four episodes dropped last Wednesday, perfectly timed for everyone having the long weekend to binge-watch, and it’s already at the top of the charts worldwide. As a big fan, I was glued to the screen, and it’s totally living up to the hype.
While it’s challenging to compete with Netflix’s most popular shows this month, like the intense thriller The Beast in Me, this series has consistently stayed in the Top 5 worldwide for at least two weeks.
Absentia Has Become A Viral Crime Thriller On Netflix This Month
Netflix’s most popular and highly-rated shows, like Adolescence and Wednesday, are almost always original productions created and released exclusively for its subscribers.
Occasionally, Netflix finds a series that already exists and becomes a streaming success without making any changes to it. That’s what happened with Absentia, a thrilling crime show that first appeared on Prime Video in 2017.
The TV series Absentia centers around an FBI agent who returns after being presumed dead. She then has to rebuild her life, prove her innocence, and reconnect with her family, all while being investigated as the main suspect in a series of murders.
Since debuting on Netflix on November 14th, Absentia quickly became one of the platform’s most-watched shows worldwide and has remained popular for the entire month. This is especially impressive considering all the other new hit shows that have come out on Netflix this fall, making its continued success somewhat unusual for a series that isn’t brand new.

Five years after Prime Video canceled Absentia after three seasons, Netflix picked up the series and rebranded it. This move has proven very successful for Netflix, and there’s now talk of potentially continuing the show with a fourth season on the platform.
Interestingly, the show Absentia wasn’t initially a critical success, receiving a 47% rating on Rotten Tomatoes when it first came out. This highlights how unpredictable the current streaming world is – a series that might be overlooked can suddenly become a huge, trending hit on platforms like Netflix.
