Even though the Extraction movies have been hugely popular action thrillers, updates about the third film have been surprisingly hard to come by. Chris Hemsworth is set to return as Tyler Rake in the sequel, which was first announced in 2023. Now, we’re finally getting some news about when and where the movie will be filmed, along with a potential release timeframe.
I remember when the first Extraction dropped on Netflix back in 2020 – it really introduced us to Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, this total badass mercenary who just doesn’t seem to care about anything. Sam Hargrave directed it, and the story was basically about Rake being hired to rescue the kidnapped son of an Indian drug lord. Then, last year, Extraction 2 came out, and it upped the ante – this time, Rake was tasked with rescuing the family of a really nasty crime lord from a Georgian prison. It was a wild ride!

Sam Hargrave will direct and Chris Hemsworth will star in Extraction 3, with filming now scheduled to begin in June 2026, according to What’s on Netflix. The shoot is expected to continue until October 9th, 2026, and will move the setting from locations like India, Thailand, and Prague to Australia, with most of the filming taking place in Sydney. There’s also talk of some scenes being filmed in Europe.
Australia is becoming a popular filming location for big movies because of generous tax breaks and government support. Chris Hemsworth is likely thrilled to be filming the next Extraction movie in his home country. While the story might not be set in Australia, it’s definitely a possibility that Tyler Rake’s next dangerous mission will take place there. Filming is expected to wrap up around October 2026, so fans shouldn’t expect Extraction 3 to be released until sometime in 2027.
The two Extraction movies have been well-received by both critics and viewers, mainly because they deliver classic action excitement and star the engaging Chris Hemsworth. Although not officially announced, it seems likely that Netflix and the filmmakers—including The Russo Brothers, who directed Avengers: Endgame—are eager to start work on a third film. Netflix is clearly hoping to build Extraction into a major action franchise.
In addition to the upcoming Extraction 3, two new series are being developed. One will star Omar Sy (Lupin) as the lead in a show called Mercenary. Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead) will be the showrunner, and Jessica Granger will write the action-packed thriller. Set in the same universe as Extraction, Mercenary follows the story of a mercenary and his perilous mission to save hostages in Libya.
Another upcoming spin-off features Ma Dong-seok (also known as Don Lee), a fantastic action star who doesn’t get enough credit. The movie, called Tygo, tells the story of a former child soldier turned mercenary who seeks revenge on the Korean criminal world after a failed mission, as described by Netflix. With these three action thrillers in development, 2027 or 2028 could become a major year for the Extraction franchise.
