Netflix’s Canceled Thriller Masterpiece: A Must-Watch for Agatha Christie Fans

Just under a year ago, Netflix debuted a fantastic detective series that seemed very promising and was a hit with Agatha Christie lovers. However, the show was unexpectedly canceled after just one season.

Although a second season never happened, the first season of the show is a complete and engaging story. If you enjoy funny thrillers or suspenseful mysteries – particularly if you’re a fan of Agatha Christie – this Netflix series is worth watching.

Netflix’s The Residence Is The Perfect Show For Agatha Christie Fans

Netflix’s The Residence, created by Paul William Davies and produced by Shondaland (Shonda Rhimes’ company), feels reminiscent of an Agatha Christie mystery. The show, starring Uzo Aduba as detective Cordelia Cupp, starts with a murder at the White House, immediately turning the entire residence and its guests into a locked-room investigation where anyone could be the culprit.

Detective Cupp, much like Poirot, is an unusual investigator who focuses more on carefully observing people and details than on scientific evidence. Just as Poirot is known for his attachment to his mustache and Miss Marple for her knitting, Cupp is depicted as a passionate bird watcher.

The show cleverly references classic detective novels by using their titles for each episode. Like the books of Agatha Christie, The Residence also explores the impact of social class, visually separating residents and guests within the White House to highlight these differences.

The Residence Also Directly Connects 1 Major Detective Franchise

The Residence includes clever nods to other shows and movies. For example, one character jokes about not being involved in a situation like those seen in the movie Knives Out – which is funny because Knives Out is also available on Netflix, and the show shares a similar murder mystery vibe.

Many details in The Residence hint that it takes place in the same world as the movie Knives Out, and that Benoit Blanc is a genuine detective within that world. This created a great opportunity for a crossover between the two, but sadly, Netflix canceled the show before it could happen.

Netflix Canceled The Residence Too Soon

“The Residence” had everything needed to be a high-quality detective series, with each season promising a new murder mystery. Unfortunately, Netflix canceled it after just one season, prioritizing short-term results over allowing the show to develop.

Although it’s disappointing that The Residence won’t be returning to Netflix, fans can still enjoy the complete first season, which offers a satisfying conclusion without any loose ends.
