Netflix’s Best Godzilla Replacement Tops Streaming Charts Despite Poor Reviews From Critics & Audiences

Netflix is finishing the year strong with a very popular international franchise. With monster movies continuing to do well in Hollywood, the latest film in a series slated for a 2025 sequel has just been released.

Since its release on December 1st, Troll 2 has become a worldwide success on Netflix, currently ranking as the most popular film in a language other than English. As interest in the sequel grows – particularly during the week of December 1st to 7th, 2025 – the original Troll 2 movie is also seeing a boost in popularity on the streaming platform.

As a movie fan, I remember when Troll dropped on Netflix on December 1st, 2022 – it blew up instantly! It actually hit number one in a ton of countries. Netflix told us people watched it for a whopping 75.8 million hours – seriously, that’s a lot of troll-watching!

Despite initially receiving very poor reviews, Netflix’s Troll 2 is now proving popular with viewers. As of today, the film has a 50% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 16 reviews.

Interestingly, audience enjoyment, as measured by the Popcornmeter, is much lower for Troll 2 (37%). This is a big drop considering the original Troll movie received a 90% Critics’ Score and a 51% Popcornmeter score.

The cast of Troll 2 includes Ine Marie Wilmann returning as Nora Tidemann, along with Mads Sjøgård Pettersen and Kim Falck, who reprises his role as Andreas Isaksen from the first movie. Espen Aukan and Uthaug, who previously wrote the 2022 film, also wrote this 2025 installment.

Whether or not a third Troll movie will be made is still uncertain, even though the first two – Troll and Troll 2 – are currently available on Netflix. This depends on if Netflix completes its potential purchase of Warner Bros. Discovery.
