It’s rare to find a truly original sci-fi show, but Netflix’s series stands out. It doesn’t follow the usual sci-fi tropes and offers everything you’d want from a fresh take on the genre. The show nails the gritty, futuristic aesthetic of cyberpunk, and also features characters and storylines that are genuinely captivating.

The first season of Altered Carbon was a hit with fans, offering a compelling blend of science fiction ideas and a realistic story. It strived for quality without being confusing. However, the second season drastically changed the show, and many of the things viewers loved about the first season were lost.

Altered Carbon Season 1 Was Cyberpunk at Its Absolute Best

The show had a clear and compelling idea from the start: a wealthy man employs a troubled individual to investigate his own murder. This basic plot point blossomed into a complex world filled with advanced technology. A key element of this world is the ability to transfer consciousness into new bodies, meaning death isn’t final—it’s just a temporary setback for the rich. This concept subtly reinforced the show’s central themes without disrupting the flow of the story.

The world felt crowded and rundown. Violence had real weight, and actions mattered. Joel Kinnaman perfectly captured the inner turmoil of Takeshi Kovacs, showing he wasn’t a typical hero. He was just a flawed man battling his own personal struggles and trying to find his place in the world.

Honestly, critics were all over the place with this show, but regular viewers absolutely loved it! The fanbase was massive, which was amazing to see. And you know what? Even after all this time, that first season holds up. It’s a complete story, really well put together, and totally worth revisiting. I’ve rewatched it myself a few times!

The Lead Change Wasn’t the Real Problem For Altered Carbon Season 2

Many people point to Anthony Mackie taking over the role of Kovacs as the reason Altered Carbon’s second season wasn’t as good. While it’s true the show is built around characters changing bodies, the real problem wasn’t the actor. Season 2 simply made Kovacs a less interesting and more one-dimensional character, which is why it didn’t receive the same praise as the first season.

The first season of the show stood out with its slow-burn, suspenseful storytelling and mysterious sci-fi elements. However, the second season took a different approach, becoming much more straightforward and moving away from the dark, atmospheric style of the first season, though some elements of that style remained.

Because of the weak source material, the show lost what made it special. It quickly became unrecognizable, and audiences lost interest almost immediately.

Altered Carbon is Still Worth Watching Either Way

Even though the show didn’t continue past its first season, I still think Altered Carbon Season 1 is amazing. It felt like a fully finished story – all the mysteries were solved, and the characters went through complete journeys. It really stood on its own, and I appreciated that.
