One interesting take was a Netflix series from 2019 that tried to explain vampires with science. It didn’t last long – just one season – but it’s become a bit of a cult classic, and honestly, I think every horror fan should check it out at least once.
The 10-episode sci-fi horror series, V Wars, was created from the comic books and short stories of author Jonathan Maberry. It debuted on Netflix on December 5, 2019, and offered a unique take on vampires. Instead of traditional, mythical creatures, the show portrayed vampires as people infected with an ancient disease released from the melting polar ice due to global warming. This scientific explanation accounted for classic vampire traits like a sensitivity to light, a need for blood, and changes in personality – replacing folklore with a logical, disease-based cause.

We were all left on a huge cliffhanger, wondering what happened next. The truth is, it wasn’t a creative decision; it all came down to numbers and business for the streaming service.
Despite having a dedicated fanbase, V Wars wasn’t watched by enough people to justify a second season on Netflix. It wasn’t that the show was poorly made—critics had mixed opinions—but ultimately, Netflix decided not to renew it based on viewership numbers. They simply determined it wasn’t financially viable to continue.
