As a total movie and TV buff, I’m telling you, Netflix has another huge hit on their hands with this new crime thriller! It’s blowing up everywhere. Honestly, with so much content on Netflix these days, it’s tough for a show to really stand out, but this one definitely has. They’ve had a lot of original series become popular, but this one feels like it’s on another level.
Netflix offers a wide range of TV shows, from epic stories set in fantastical worlds like Stranger Things and The Witcher, to realistic dramas that explore the darker side of real life. Their collection of crime shows is particularly popular, featuring series like Mindhunter, The Night Agent, Unbelievable, and another new show coming in December 2025.
According to FlixPatrol, City of Shadows is currently the 4th most popular TV show on Netflix globally. Man Vs Baby tops the chart, followed by Stranger Things season 5 in second and Sean Combs: The Reckoning in third. Record of Ragnarok rounds out the top 5. City of Shadows premiered on Netflix on December 12th.
The six-episode crime thriller is currently the most popular show on Netflix in Spain and is also a top ten hit in numerous other countries. In fact, City of Shadows has reached the top ten lists in an impressive 60 countries, even reaching number two in places like Belgium, the Czech Republic, Greece, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Uruguay.
Despite being a compelling crime thriller, City of Shadows hasn’t yet become a mainstream hit on Netflix in the US. While shows like The Accident, The Beast in Me, and the latest season of Stranger Things are currently topping the charts, this dark series remains relatively undiscovered.
Although City of Shadows isn’t currently charting in the US, it’s clearly making an impact globally, earning strong reviews. The series recently launched on Rotten Tomatoes and impressively received a perfect 100% score from critics. While only five reviews are available so far, it’s a very promising beginning for the new Netflix crime thriller.
The Spanish series City of Shadows centers around Milo Malart (Isak Férriz), a detective who’s been suspended from duty. He investigates a disturbing crime: a body found burning inside Barcelona’s famous La Pedrera building. The series is based on the first book in Aro Sáinz de la Maza’s four-book Milo Malart mystery series.
