Inspired by the beloved Konami video game, Castlevania is a standout fantasy series on Netflix. Despite receiving positive reviews, it doesn’t always get the attention it deserves. While Netflix has invested heavily in fantasy programming, it hasn’t spent quite as much as Prime Video did on The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power.
After being let down by how Game of Thrones ended, I’ve been hoping for another fantasy show that could be both really popular and well-made. Netflix has definitely been trying with big-budget shows like Cursed and Arcane, and honestly, I think they might have already struck gold with a new fantasy series that could be something truly special.
Castlevania Is A Perfect Video Game Adaptation
Based on the popular 1989 video game Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, the series Castlevania was created by Adi Shankar, known for his work on Devil May Cry. The show tells the story of Trevor Belmont and Vlad Dracula, drawing inspiration from other games in the Castlevania series as well.
When Vlad Dracula gathers a demonic army to attack the people of Wallachia, monster hunter Belmont rises to challenge him and his supernatural forces, hoping to liberate the city. Richard Armitage plays Belmont, and James Callis portrays Dracula’s half-vampire son, Adrian “Alucard” Tepes.
The animated series Castlevania, which ran from 2017 to 2021, was immediately praised by critics. They loved how it captured the feel and look of the original video game, stayed true to the story, and delivered exciting, violent action. The main criticism of the first season, according to reviewers, was that it was over too quickly.
Thankfully, Castlevania quickly improved upon its initial short length with season 2, which featured eight episodes – double the amount from season 1. Critics loved this expanded season, calling it one of the best video game adaptations ever made, and it earned a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The show continued to receive excellent reviews for its remaining two seasons.
Castlevania: Nocturne Makes The Show’s Success Even More Impressive
Despite the 2021 finale, the story of Castlevania wasn’t over. Its distinctive mix of intense horror, exciting action, compelling characters, and fantasy elements made it stand out, and both fans and critics immediately wanted more.
As a huge fan of the Castlevania series, I was so thrilled with what they did in 2023 with Castlevania: Nocturne. It really delivered on everything I hoped for! This time around, the story follows Richter Belmont, a descendant of Trevor, and it’s set against the backdrop of the French Revolution. Basically, Richter’s trying to take down this incredibly powerful vampire – the Vampire Messiah – and prevent the end of the world as we know it. It’s a fantastic continuation of the story!
Like its first season, Castlevania: Nocturne is full of intense action, unexpected twists, and impressive visuals, making it a strong follow-up to the original series. It solidifies Castlevania as one of Netflix’s best fantasy shows and a truly successful video game adaptation.
