Despite receiving poor reviews from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, the film The Elixir is currently popular on streaming platforms. Originally titled Abadi Nan Jaya in Indonesian, this new Netflix horror movie centers around a family struggling to cooperate and survive after a zombie outbreak is triggered by tainted traditional herbal medicine called jamu.
Although critics haven’t reviewed The Elixir enough to give it an official Tomatometer score, over 50 viewers have shared their opinions, and most of them didn’t like it. As a result, the zombie film currently has a Popcornmeter score of only 26%.
Even though viewers on Rotten Tomatoes weren’t very excited about it, The Elixir became the most-watched non-English movie on Netflix for the week of October 20th to 26th. It reached the top spot with 11.4 million viewers, totaling 22.4 million hours of watch time.
The success of The Elixir came from its widespread popularity, reaching the top 10 in 75 countries during a single week. It even hit No. 1 in five countries: the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Peru, Türkiye, and Indonesia, where it originated.
Overall, The Elixir ranked as the fourth most popular movie on the platform that week. Only three English-language titles were more watched: Kathryn Bigelow’s A House of Dynamite, the documentary The Perfect Neighbor, and the hugely successful animated musical KPop Demon Hunters.
Besides performing well against other English-language films on the chart – like The Woman in Cabin 10, The Twits, and the 2025 release of I Know What You Did Last Summer – The Elixir became Netflix’s most-watched horror movie the week leading up to Halloween, a period when people typically watch a lot of classic horror films.
What’s particularly impressive about how well The Elixir is doing is that it wasn’t released until October 23rd, mid-way through the week. Since the week of Halloween will be its first full week available, we can likely expect even stronger viewership numbers in the next report.
As a film buff, I’m really excited to see The Elixir unexpectedly taking off right before Halloween! It’s great timing, and it could totally turn things around after the initial mixed reactions. This could be another massive win for Netflix internationally. They’re still known for their English-language shows, of course, but they’ve proven they can deliver global hits in so many languages – think Money Heist and Through My Window from Spain, Under Paris from France, and the phenomenon that was Squid Game from Korea. Hopefully, The Elixir joins that club!
