Netflix has decided not to move forward with its planned series based on Stephen King’s novel, The Talisman. The creators of Stranger Things have confirmed the project, which had been in development for a long time, is now canceled.
Netflix’s The Talisman adaptation confirmed dead by the Duffer Brothers
Matt and Ross Duffer, the creators of Stranger Things, were previously working on a Netflix series based on The Talisman. This would have been their first big project separate from Stranger Things, but it’s no longer moving forward.
The Duffer Brothers have confirmed to CBR that their planned adaptation of ‘Talisman’ will no longer be moving forward with Netflix. Ross Duffer stated they are no longer working on the project, following several years of difficulties in development.
Matt Duffer believes they initially underestimated how difficult adapting ‘The Talisman’ would be. He admitted they were likely naive to think they could finally get the project made, considering its long and troubled history in Hollywood. Ross Duffer added that the book has been stuck in development for decades, and they weren’t able to overcome that challenge. Matt concluded that whoever does manage to adapt the novel successfully will be the ones to finally ‘break the curse’.
Stephen King and Peter Straub’s novel, The Talisman, published in 1984, tells the story of Jack Sawyer, a boy who travels to a magical realm called the Territories to find an artifact that can heal his mother. A follow-up novel, Black House, was released in 2001, catching up with Jack as an adult who has forgotten his childhood adventure. The original novel was adapted into a short film in 2008 and a graphic novel in 2009. A full-length film adaptation has been in development with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners for some time, but the Duffer Brothers recently mentioned it’s still a ways off.
While The Talisman is now canceled, the Duffer Brothers remain busy with other projects.
