As a huge movie fan, I was pretty shocked to hear that just bought Warner Bros. on December 5th! But thankfully, they’ve quickly let everyone know that things aren’t going to change drastically right away, which is a relief.
Warner Bros. announced last night it will be put up for sale after splitting from Discovery Global. Several major companies, including Comcast and Netflix, expressed interest in buying it. Netflix ultimately made the winning bid. Although the deal has sparked controversy, Netflix is assuring viewers that significant changes aren’t expected anytime soon.
Immediately following the news, Netflix sent an email to its users with the subject line, “Welcome Warner Bros. to Netflix.”
The streamer recently announced that Netflix is buying Warner Bros., encompassing its movie and TV studios, HBO Max, and HBO.
The announcement explained that this combines our top streaming service with Warner Bros.’ famous stories, bringing together globally popular franchises like Harry Potter, Friends, The Big Bang Theory, Casablanca, Game of Thrones and the DC Universe with hits like Stranger Things, Wednesday, Squid Game, Bridgerton, and KPop Demon Hunters.
The streamer also answered a key question on everyone’s mind: what’s happening now? Because Netflix previously dominated the streaming market, their acquisition of a major company in the industry has understandably caused some concern. However, according to Netflix, “Nothing is changing right now.”
Okay, so the big news is that Netflix and HBO Max aren’t merging, thankfully! They’ve made it clear both platforms will keep running as they are. Warner Bros. will also stay its own thing, and HBO Max isn’t going anywhere as a separate service, which is a relief for us streaming fans.
The company confirmed that prices won’t change right now. They explained that the deal still needs to be approved by regulators and shareholders, and they’ll share updates when available. For now, customers can continue using their current plan and enjoy unlimited viewing as usual.
Jane Fonda Criticized Netflix’s Warner Bros. Acquisition
Netflix is moving into a new phase that could reshape the entertainment industry, but the move isn’t without criticism. A celebrated actress recently voiced strong concerns online, calling the deal a “constitutional crisis” and “catastrophic,” and has asked the Department of Justice to investigate and ensure legal compliance.
Fonda believes the acquisition is devastating for an industry that relies on open communication. She argues it’s not simply a bad business move that threatens creativity, but a serious legal and constitutional problem, especially given the administration’s history of ignoring the law.
