Netflix broke records on Christmas Day by streaming the most-watched NFL game ever on a U.S. streaming service.
Nielsen reports that an average of 27.5 million people watched the live stream of the Minnesota Vikings versus Detroit Lions game on Netflix, making it the most-watched NFL game ever streamed in the US. At its peak, over 30 million viewers tuned in, and Snoop Dogg’s halftime show averaged 29 million viewers.
The recent viewership numbers confirm that Netflix is now a serious player in live sports broadcasting. Their NFL games last Christmas drew impressive audiences – 24.3 million and 24.1 million viewers, respectively. Although this year’s Cowboys-Commanders game saw slightly fewer viewers (averaging 19.9 million), the Lions-Vikings game performed strongly, balancing out the overall numbers.
In addition to viewers in the United States, Netflix streamed NFL games to an international audience. The games were available worldwide, attracting viewers from over 200 countries and territories. The game between the Lions and Vikings, for example, averaged 30.5 million viewers globally.
As a big football fan, I noticed a huge jump in viewers for the Vikings-Lions game, and everyone was talking about the halftime show as a major reason why. Snoop Dogg headlined, which was awesome, and he brought out Lainey Wilson, a fantastic country singer. But the real surprise – and genius move, honestly – was having Martha Stewart appear! It totally brought in viewers who wouldn’t normally watch football, which was really smart. It was a performance that appealed to so many different people.
Netflix had a record-breaking Christmas Day, not just because of NFL games. The new season of the popular show Stranger Things also premiered that day and became the most-watched title on the platform worldwide. While Netflix hasn’t revealed exact numbers, the series was a huge hit with viewers on December 25th.
Super Bowl LX will be held at Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers, on February 8, 2026. The game will be broadcast on NBC, starting at 6:30 PM Eastern Time and 3:30 PM Pacific Time.
