Netflix Just Added Triangle of Sadness

Even though February is a short month, Netflix has plenty to offer! Starting February 21st, you can watch the critically acclaimed film, Triangle of Sadness.

The streaming service offers a variety of original content, as well as many popular licensed shows and movies, including live-action adaptations of How to Train Your Dragon and Jurassic World Rebirth. Recently added is Triangle of Sadness, a critically acclaimed black comedy that received three Oscar nominations.

This sharp and funny film marks Ruben Östlund’s first time directing an English-language movie, which he also wrote. The movie features a talented cast, including Harris Dickinson as Carl, the late Charlbi Dean in her final performance as Yaya, along with Dolly de Leon, Zlatko Burić, Iris Berben, Vicki Berlin, Henrik Dorsin, Jean-Christophe Folly, Amanda Walker, Oliver Ford Davies, Sunnyi Melles, and Woody Harrelson.

What Is Triangle of Sadness About?

The movie unfolds in three sections and begins like a dream vacation. It centers around Carl and Yaya, a famous couple known for their modeling and social media presence. Right away, it becomes apparent their relationship is troubled; Yaya confesses she’s with Carl primarily for the publicity it brings.

The situation takes a dangerous turn when the pair receive an invitation to a lavish yacht vacation with a group of very rich people, led by a wildly unpredictable captain. What begins as an idyllic, picture-perfect getaway quickly turns into a disaster when the yacht sinks, leaving everyone stranded on a deserted island and struggling to survive.

The film Triangle of Sadness received critical acclaim and earned three Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. It also won the prestigious Palme d’Or. Critics gave it a 72% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences rated it even higher, at 80%.

The darkly humorous comedy earned $32.9 million globally on a $15.6 million production budget. While it wasn’t a huge money-maker for its distributor, Lionsgate, it also wasn’t considered a box office failure.

Triangle of Sadness Is Perfect for The White Lotus Fans

I’ve been searching for something to fill the void left by The White Lotus, and I think I’ve found it in Triangle of Sadness. While we wait for Netflix to give us a new show to obsess over, this movie is perfect! It’s a really sharp and funny look at the lives of the super-rich, and it feels like it carries on the same kind of insightful, slightly uncomfortable social commentary that made The White Lotus so brilliant.

Both Triangle of Sadness and The White Lotus explore the lives of the super-rich and how disconnected they are from reality, using the backdrop of a vacation to offer a critique of society. The White Lotus primarily centers around the experiences of guests at a luxurious resort.

Both stories challenge the wealthy and their sense of privilege, but the Oscar-nominated film goes further by using violence to embarrass them and dramatically reverse the balance of power, turning the tables on those in charge as characters fight to survive.

Triangle of Sadness is streaming on Netflix. The White Lotus is streaming on HBO Max.
