Despite its recent box office success, a 2025 reimagining of a popular horror film, Netflix is preparing to remove the original movie from its streaming service. While the original didn’t receive rave reviews, it gained a dedicated following due to its lighthearted and self-aware nature.
If you enjoyed the 1997 movie Anaconda, you only have a few weeks left to watch it on Netflix. It will no longer be available on the streaming service after February 1st.
The film, directed by Luis Llosa and written by Hans Bauer, Jim Cash, and Jack Epps Jr., follows a documentary crew venturing into the Amazon rainforest to find a hidden indigenous tribe. Their journey takes a dangerous turn when they meet Paul Serone, a snake hunter played by Jon Voight, who is hunting for a gigantic Anaconda. Soon, the hunt becomes a fight for survival.
In addition to Jennifer Lopez and Dennis Quaid, Anaconda boasts a talented cast including Ice Cube, Eric Stoltz, Owen Wilson, Danny Trejo, Vincent Castellanos, Kari Wuhrer, and Jonathan Hyde. The film also features sound effects by the renowned Frank Welker, who brought the anacondas to life with his voice work.
Released in 1997, Anaconda was a big financial hit, earning over $136.8 million on a $45 million budget. However, despite its box office success, the film received mostly negative reviews from both critics and viewers. Currently, Rotten Tomatoes gives it a low 41% rating based on 58 critic reviews, and audiences give it an even lower 24%.
What Can Fans Expect from the New Anaconda Reboot?
A new take on the classic film Anaconda premiered in theaters on December 25th, much to the excitement of fans. Starring Jack Black and Paul Rudd as best friends Doug McCallister and Ronald Griffen Jr., the movie follows their adventure to recreate their favorite film in the Amazon rainforest. Predictably, their fun trip turns dangerous when a massive, flesh-eating anaconda starts attacking them.

The movie Anaconda has received mostly mixed to positive reactions from both critics and viewers since its release. Currently, Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 51% rating based on 142 reviews. However, audiences seem to enjoy it more, giving it a 76% score based on over 1,000 reviews.
Jack Black assured fans the new movie is much funnier than the first one, but still keeps the same spooky feel. He described it as a genuine horror film with plenty of comedic moments.
