Netflix has canceled its series Boots, which focused on gay soldiers, after strong objections from Pentagon officials. The disagreement came to a head when a Pentagon spokesperson publicly criticized the show, stating it didn’t align with military values.

Netflix described the series as a coming-of-age story about a gay teenager’s search for identity and acceptance while serving in the military during the 1990s, under the ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy. Though critics liked the show, military leaders criticized it for what they saw as a pattern of entertainment companies imposing their own beliefs onto the armed forces, which they believe prioritize discipline and results.
Pentagon Pushback on Ideological Messaging
In a statement to Entertainment Weekly last October, Pentagon spokesperson Kingsley Wilson explained that military leaders wouldn’t lower their standards just to make a cultural statement.
Wilson criticized military officials for refusing to lower their standards to align with certain beliefs, and he contrasted this with what he sees as Netflix consistently creating and distributing content he considers to be overly focused on progressive social issues, even for children.

The comment highlighted growing worries within the Department of Defense that movies and TV shows are increasingly mixing entertainment with pushing a particular viewpoint. This is especially concerning when these shows portray organizations like the military, which depend on teamwork and physical fitness.
‘Restoring the Warrior Ethos’
Wilson highlighted a shift in the military’s priorities, noting that under President Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, the focus is now on being prepared and recognizing skill, rather than simply on public relations.
According to Wilson, the U.S. military, under President Trump and Secretary Hegseth, is refocusing on traditional values of strength and skill. They are implementing consistent, high standards for all soldiers, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, emphasizing that physical demands apply equally to everyone.

The statement highlighted that what the military actually needs is based on practical, real-world situations, not how things are presented or perceived. This is a common criticism of how military life is shown in movies and TV shows.
Netflix Pulls the Plug
Netflix removed the show Boots from its platform in December, only two months after it first launched in October. Deadline was the first to report the cancellation, based on information from sources close to the decision. Although Netflix hasn’t officially said so, the timing of the cancellation – shortly after criticism from the Pentagon – has led many to wonder if that controversy played a role. This is especially relevant as Netflix is currently seeking federal approval for its purchase of Warner Bros.

Although critics generally loved the show – it received a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – the platform didn’t continue with it for very long.
Federal Scrutiny Looms Over Netflix
The timing of Boots being canceled may also reflect broader corporate considerations for Netflix.
The company recently announced it plans to buy Warner Bros., but the deal needs to be approved by regulators and carefully reviewed to ensure it doesn’t violate antitrust laws. Because that approval process is still ongoing, Netflix is likely being cautious about publicly disagreeing with the government or military leaders.

If Netflix fails to get the necessary regulatory approvals, the deal will likely fall through, and they’ll have to pay Warner Bros. Discovery a hefty penalty of almost $6 billion. This makes securing approval crucial for Netflix.
A Larger Pattern for Netflix
Netflix is increasingly facing criticism and canceling shows due to concerns about how they present ideas and values, especially those targeted at children or that portray groups like the military.

Even as Netflix stands by its artistic choices, the Pentagon’s unusually direct criticism was a noteworthy instance of government officials publicly calling out a large entertainment company.
