With 2025 nearing its end, two major potential acquisitions have emerged: Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and others proposing to buy EA for $55 billion, and Netflix’s recent $82 billion offer for Warner Bros. Studios. A new report reveals that Netflix initially explored purchasing EA, along with two other film studios, before ultimately focusing on Warner Bros.
So, I was reading Bloomberg, and apparently, the folks over at Netflix were seriously thinking about buying EA, Fox, and even Disney! Can you believe it? But it sounds like they couldn’t get everyone on board with a deal. They were worried that if investors found out they were trying to acquire those big companies, it would actually hurt Netflix’s stock price, so they ended up backing off.
The report lacks specific information about when Netflix explored potential acquisitions. This is noteworthy because Disney is known for buying studios – they already own Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm. For example, Disney’s purchase of Fox’s entertainment businesses in 2019 took a long time to get approved by regulators globally.
Both the proposed Warner Bros. and EA deals are still uncertain, as they require approval from regulators who are carefully reviewing them. These deals could significantly change the video game industry. If the EA deal goes through, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund is expected to become the majority owner. This has prompted concerns from Senators Richard Blumenthal and Elizabeth Warren about potential outside influence over EA. EA has stated in official filings that it will maintain creative control despite the potential ownership change.
So, it looks like if Netflix and Warner Bros. finalize their deal, Netflix would end up owning the rights to some huge gaming franchises like Mortal Kombat, Batman, and Harry Potter! I remember being really excited when Netflix jumped into gaming, but they seemed to pull back a bit in 2024. They actually canceled a big multiplayer shooter game that was being worked on by people who made Halo and Destiny, which was a bummer. And just recently, in October, they closed down Boss Fight, the studio that made the Squid Game mobile game. It makes you wonder what their plans are for gaming moving forward.
