Netflix has canceled “Boots” after one season, despite positive reviews and some public discussion. The show, which premiered in October, joins a growing list of Netflix series that won’t be returning for another season.
The series ‘Boots’ drew inspiration from Greg Cope White’s memoir, ‘The Pink Marine.’ It followed Cameron (Miles Heizer) and his close friend Ray (Liam Oh) as they joined the Marines, each with their own motivations—Cameron sought a way to escape his difficult home life and explore his identity, while Ray aimed to follow in his father’s footsteps. The cast also featured Vera Farmiga, Max Parker, Kieron Moore, and Ana Ayora. The show’s central premise was described as follows:
A teenager who was often bullied unexpectedly joined the U.S. Marine Corps and discovered a new sense of direction in life, along with a strong bond with his diverse group of fellow recruits.
Although the show didn’t stay at the top of the charts for very long, it quickly gained popularity after its release. Positive reviews and debate – particularly from military veterans who questioned its realism – helped boost its visibility. Viewership jumped from 5 million in its first week to nearly 10 million in its second. Both critics and audiences loved it, giving it a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and praising the actors’ performances.
Pentagon spokesperson Kingsley Wilson sharply criticized the Netflix show, calling it “woke garbage” and accusing the streaming service of pushing a particular ideology. However, his criticism likely had the opposite effect, drawing more attention to the show and increasing the number of viewers.
As a fan, I was really upset when I heard the show was canceled, and it seems like a lot of us feel the same way. People immediately started sharing how frustrated they were, with many pointing out that it was popular and didn’t even seem like it cost a lot to make. One fan said it was just frustrating, and another explained that the show wasn’t pushing any agenda or portraying the military negatively – they were just really disappointed to see it go, and honestly, I am too.
Star Miles Heizer expressed his sadness and disappointment on Instagram about the story being unable to continue.
Is ‘Boots’ worth watching on Netflix?
Even though the show was cancelled before it could finish its story, it’s still enjoyable to watch all the episodes. Be aware that some storylines are left hanging. While the creators had ideas for future seasons, it looks like fans won’t see them. If you’re okay with shows that don’t tie up every loose end, you’ll likely have a good time watching it, especially since it might not be available on Netflix much longer.
The cancellation is especially disappointing because Netflix has revived shows like Lucifer and Manifest in the past. However, the terms of their contracts likely prevent the cast and crew from continuing the series on another streaming service, even if they wanted to.
